Scales of War is a 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons campaign based largely on the Adventure Path by the same name from [[1]Dungeon Magazine]. The DM is Emily Parkhurst.

  • Tusk - orc leader who tried to invade Overlook with Sarshan's assistance.
  • Myrissa - shadar-kai witch and Tusk's companion. She fled to Umbraforge after Tusk's demise. After finding a position in Sarshan's army, she went to assist the Wicked Fang gnolls.
  • Modra - a dark creeper and former lieutenant in Sarshan's arms-running operation. He went behind Sarshan's back to aid Tusk.
  • Sarshan - an opportunistic shadar-kai arms dealer. For years, he has built an invisible mercantile empire around the sale and brokering of weapons, armor, mercenaries, and intelligence from his domain in the Shadowfell.
  • Fangren - gnoll shaman leader of the Wicked Fang tribe.

  • A hobgoblin warband seeking to gain fame and fortune is urged by mysterious "Emissary" to attack town of Brindol.
  • After the hobgoblin band attacks, stealing relics and kidnappings townsfolk, the party is recruited to rescue the captives.

[edit] Synopsis

  • A bounty is put on Hedoni by the Baron. So the group travels to the city of Overlook to confront the Baron. Hedoni must prove he is not the father of the Baron’s grandchild and possibly find the true father.
  • While in the city, the group meets another group of adventures, the Freeriders, and learns of the upcoming call to arms.

  • Taff - He is the baron’s lead halfling thug.
  • Baron Corsarn - He controls the market on herbs, potions, and other ritual component. He also is the main dealer in black-market ingredients and the smuggling and dealing on these banned substances.

3. Adventurers

  • Megan Swiftblade (human fighter) - She is the leader of the Freeriders. Megan is sword thin with an attractive figure, keeps her blond hair cut short, and has a vicious scar that runs from her forehead and down her left cheek.
  • Ragnum Dourstone (dwarf priest) - The heart of the Freeriders is Ragnum Dourstone, a graying dwarf priest of Moradin. Gruff and serious, he believes in doing his duty with honor and is an implacable foe when crossed.
  • Sylen Leafrunner (elf ranger) - Sylen is whip thin, with long brown hair and angular features that give him the look of a fox. Although he feels strongly for Megan, he is sometimes secretly ashamed, feeling as though he has betrayed his people and his culture by his dalliance in human realms. He is intensely protective of Megan.
  • Ghena Tenson (human wizard) - An arcanist of some talent, Ghena is short, pudgy, with a round face and small eyes, she has shoulder-length blond hair, a face full of freckles, and long, slender fingers
  • Madrick (gnome rogue) - Madrick is short, with pale skin, and large black eyes. He wears brown and gray clothing to help him sneak about. His best friend in the world is Bandit and the raccoon is never far from his side. He rarely, if ever speaks.
  • The Farstriders

Led by Edgar Sommerfield, a warlord of some fame, the Farstriders are far and above the most successful adventuring party in these lands. They’ve slain a black dragon, ousted a nest of kobolds, and even undertaken an expedition into the Shadowfell. Aside from Sommerfield, the group includes twin elf rangers, Uulath and Reiner, a half-elf warlock named Jen, and Corben, a human fighter.

  • Time - Beginning of June

[edit] Synopsis

  • The party respond to a call to arms: an orc invasion of Elsir Vale is imminent. After a meeting with the Council of Overlook the party are sent on a mission to rescue monks from the Sundered Chain monastery. All but one, a dwarf named Kalad, are dead. Daggoth receives Morradin's notice and a divine reward.
  • The Freeriders undertake a mission to seal the tunnels under Elsir Falls. The Farstriders are sent to secure the Nexus, but the fail.
  • At Kalad's urging the party goes to the Nexus in order to prevent the orc army from breaching the defenses and sweeping unhindered into Elsir Vale.
  • The party learns that this Orc invasion also has ties to the Shadowfell and the same dark creeper that supported Sinruth at Rivenroar. However things are a bit more complicated among the dark ones. Apparently Myrissa and Modra are taking a great risk and going behind the boss's back to supply Tusk and his army.

  • Overlook - Dwarven city at the west end of Elsir Vale.
  • Monastery of the Sundered Chain - Constructed centuries ago to house an elite fighting force of Moradin dedicates, the Monastery of the Sundered Chain preserves the memories of the hardships endured at the hands of the giants, and it trains initiates in fighting arts useful for battling these foes. For generations, the monastery has stood as a symbol of dwarven perseverance and expertise in the fighting arts.
  • Vents/Nexus - Series of dwarf sculpted tunnels and underground structures that connect to Orc Country past the Stoneholm Mountains.

NPCs 1. Enemies

  • Tusk - Orc chief, he drew together the unruly tribes to mount an offensive against Bordrin’s Watch to lay claim to the soft lands beyond its walls.
  • Myrissa - Shadar-kai Tusk's advisor and companion. She arranged the deal in the Shadowfell to supply special weapons and recruit dark ones to their cause.
  • Emissary/ Iranda - liason between dark creeper Modra and contacts in the world. Iranda encouraged Sinruth's band and now Tusk.

2. Allies

  • Kalad - Dwarf paladin. He is a deeply pious dwarf paladin from the monastery of the sundered chain. Kalad is tall for a dwarf, thickly muscled. He’s plagued with the horrors of the attack and he won’t know peace until the orcs are stopped.

  • Ravenblade is lured back to his hometown and framed for murder. While the dwarf waits in jail, the rest of the party must investigate and try to exonerate him.
  • Also, the clan chief's daughter, and Ravenblade's old flame, Kyra, ran away to Overlook several months ago.
  • The party learns that the clan chief faked his own death to frame Ravenblade, substituting a bard's body for his own and burning down half his house.

  • Baldoc Hammerfist - Clan chief of Hammerfist. He has a stern manner and is very protective of his family and his clan. Baldoc is also known for being an excellent builder and architect.

[edit] The Shadow Rift of Umbraforge

  • Time - End of June

[edit] Synopsis

  • On the trail of Modra and Myrissa, the party discovers a portal to the Shadowfell beneath a poorhouse known as the Happy Beggar.
  • The adventurers find themselves in Umbraforge, an isolated military enclave that grows ever larger in its preparations for war.
  • The group eliminates Modra in the foundry and discover that Sarshan is harnessing the power of the nearby volcano.
  • After infiltrating Sarshan’s tower, and being overpowered by the shadar-kai, the group goes undercover. They take on a mission for Sarshan to escort a shipment of weapons destined for pack of gnolls.

  • Time - Beginning of July

[edit] Synopsis

  • Instead of sending the party to equip and train the Wicked Fang gnolls, Sarshan asks the group to find and bring him the Seed of Winter, a powerful weather control artifact. Jalissa, who just happens to be an expert on the matter, joins the Liberators as they fight their way through the ancient Iounian Temple, StoneStep Hill.
  • The Freeriders are also hired to find the artifact by the Cachlain, the Formorian Queen.
  • The Freeriders and Liberators meet in the middle of the zigguart, together fight off a group of cold monsters, only to find the Seed of Winter had already been taken by someone else.
  • The adventurers start having dreams about a woman trapped in a sword.

[edit] Synopsis

  • Passing through Brindol, the party learns that the sword they retrieved from Sinruth actually holds an imprisoned woman who needs their help.
  • They find the abandoned Githzerai Fortress Graystone and learned that Sarshan had sent Myrissa to equip and train the gnolls.
  • The party vanquishes the Wicked Fang gnolls and Myrissa. Amyria is freed from the sword during a tough fight with Fangren.
  • Unfortunately the group failed to save any of the Red Rock village children and the angry villagers turn against the party.
  • During this time, Salazar starts to become unstable and his powers too become increasingly erratic.

  • Since Salazar as becoming increasingly unstable, the group decides to travel to Olorin's Academy to find help for Salazar and cure him.
  • After being mislead and ambushed, the group finally battles Professor Tevors, a disguised spellweaver.
  • For their assistance to the school, Headmaster Aurythia rewards the group and aids Salazar in breaking his warlock pact with the devil Zoldathra.

[edit] Synopsis

  • Jalissa asks the party to investigate Gy’s disappearance. It turns out Gy and his wife Haelyn were killed by Grovald.
  • Baron Corsarn asks the party to get Taff out of Jail. Watch Captian Aerun is acting strangely.
  • The party uncovers that a conspiracy, orchestrated by a mysterious General Zithiruun, is worming its way into the city’s hierarchy. They discover that Aerun was possessed and that High Ancestor Durkik was replaced by a doppleganger.
  • After rescuing the real Durkik, the party travels to the Mountainroot Temple to uncover Zithiruun's plans and recover some holy relics called The True Rivets.
