My general thought was that the group had performed a previous job for Brevoy, thus earning their attention for the current charter. I'm pretty open to whatever ideas you guys have, but if it'll help, I can post some ideas based on info in the campaign setting this evening.

CB file sent; I hope I got the right email address. I should note that I'm getting fairly close to my overseas move. I'll have limited connectivity from the 29th for at least a week or two, and will be actually travelling on the 5th and 6th.

I've got CB files from Emily, Viktor, Jonathan, and Greg, and pics from all of those except Greg. I still need Ken's CB file and pic, and Nathan was going to let me know soon if he was in or out, in which case I need his stuff if he's in.

Hopefully everyone can get me their stuff in time to start this weekend!

Also, ideas for your first mission for Brevoy -

1 - Searched the Valley of Fire for any sign of the missing royal family (the Valley was the site of the battle where Choral the Conqueror defeated the armies of Rostland, resulting in Choral controlling Brevoy)

2 - Scout out Skywatch, a city built around an ancient observatory in the northeast of Brevoy that has been sealed off since the king disappeared.

3 - Tried to root out the Robin Hood-like Duma the Sly, a bandit hiding in the Grozni forest.

4 - Searched ancient ruins in the Icerime mountains.

5 - Assisted the dwarves of the Golushkin Mountains in repelling a goblin or orc attack.

Let me know if any of those sound interesting. I can try to flesh them out more for you, if you want.

I vote for having scouted Skywatch if this is just an arbitrary decision. However, if the one we choose means we won't be playing that scenario then I vote the Golushkin Mountains orc attack since it sounds the least exciting.

You won't be playing out whatever you pick. Well, you really won't be playing out any of them, as the adventures focus on settling the untamed lands to the south. But Emily had asked for some possible options tied to the setting, which I provided since I've read up on it most.

Bad news. Ken's informed me that he won't be able to play due to time constraints. That leaves us with 4 players, 5 if Nathan is in, and no defender. I'm thinking about recruiting another EN Worlder, but wanted to get some feedback from you guys first.

I trust you and whoever you bring in. Obviously, though, if Nathan plays, that can solve the issue as well, although that would be defenders in all 3 campaigns for Nathan.

So that leaves us currently with the following:

Covaithe's invoker (controller)
Emily's cleric (leader)
Jonathan's runepriest (leader)
Viktor's monk (striker)

A defender is the obvious one missing, another striker might do the trick too or even a leader, but definitely another melee type would be nice. Nathan could also play a hybrid defender/something else to spice things up. An ENworld player known to Gary would work too. Some possible hybrids might be:

Barbarian/Warden
Sorceror/Bard
Warlord/Warden

Wait a second. Wasn't it going to be possible that I would play after my summer classes are done in mid-August? I would most likely play a stealthy rogue, but if I do play I may have other ideas by then.

Yes, I also recall Josh expressing interest and he hasn't played a defender before (if he's interested).

I recall the discussion being that the sixth spot was going to be either Josh later or Nathan now, and if Nathan played Josh would not come in in August, as seven players would be too many.

If I don't get an EN Worlder now and Nathan does join, or I get an EN Worlder and Nathan passes, that'd give us five and Josh could join in August. If I get an EN Worlder now and Nathan joins, that's six already.

Waiting for Josh to join in August before having a defender (assuming Josh would play a defender) would be a little tricky.

In POSITIVE news, I got my hard copy of Kingmaker #2 in the mail yesterday. :)

Well, I don't really care about the roles too much. I actually think it is interesting to have parties without the optimal set of roles. Of course, since I wouldn't be joining until mid August, it is more up to the current crop than anything else.

Sorry about being MIA. I was under the impression that Josh had claimed the final spot, and I just walked off into the sunset. :) Gary asked if I wanted to play 2 days ago, and I've thought things over and I'd like to. I had planned to give the back-story for my elf archer ranger here, but then I read about the defender problems. As Jon's pointed out, I'd be 3 for 3 in playing defender's at deadgoblins.

The ranger was going to do three things, increase the party racial mix, give me a sweet damage dealer for once, and round out every hole the party had in trailblazing skills (nature, dungeoneering, perception, and eventually thievery). So, now I'm looking at the defender list, and I'm either playing them or not really interested, except for maybe warden. It fills in all of the frontier skills for us. That means I'd either go lifespirit or wildblood. Wildblood might be a tad better with two leaders already in the party. How many more heals/saving throws would we need?

I'm not sold on this, as the warden sucks at damage dealing even for a defender. Still, it meshes well with the party, even if the backstory I wrote gets junked.

The warden hybrid appears a bit weak, as his mark isn't so hot and he only gets to mark one enemy a turn. Still, the mark keys off of immediate actions, so that's not crippling. I'm open to suggestions. barb/warden seems possible, though less than idea as my secondary stats would get split.

I'm also open to race ideas. I already play a warforged, but a warforged warden was actually runner up for my Eberron character... I don't really find the shifter's all that enticing.

Rereading the above, I feel like I'm trying to talk myself into something. I'll let other people see the post and chew on the options. I like the idea of actually dealing damage for once, but spamming slows while being unkillable could be nice.

I'd rather you play a character you will enjoy than playing one you feel obligated to play and would have to force yourself to do so.

Go for the striker. It sounds like you're defendered out and want to have some fun kicking butt with high damage.

The runepriest and monk are melee types so a ranged striker could work. In fact, the Hunter Fighting Style class build for rangers grants +4 AC to opportunity attacks when making a ranged attack. With DEX 20 to start and hide armor that's effectively 22 AC against OA's for making ranged attacks. With Defensive Mobility feat you would get another +2 against OA. With such a high anti-OA armor class, shooting in close combat would be much safer, and would occasionally take the heat off of the runepriest and monk.

Sorcerers are very fun strikers too and you could always also play a monk, maybe Centered Breath.

I could also ask whichever EN Worlder I decide to recruit if they'd mind playing a defender.

Here's another thought, Nathan - if you go bow ranger, you could go beastmaster instead of archer or hunter fighting styles, and the beast would be a way to pseudo-defend and clog up melee for your enemies.

Or if Josh is still planning on jumping in in August, and we absolutely NEED a defender, he can look at that role potentially.

I'll have a close look at the beast mechanic tonight, though I'd be tempted to have my character use two swords and wear blackface with that route ;) The warden idea might be growing on me; I had trouble finding the warforged explanation for pathfinder's universe. Can you tell me where I could find it, or a brief explanation?

Check out:

http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/Numeria

Numeria hosts a crashed spaceship, and a few years back, Gearmen - essentially, warforged in a non-WotC trademarked name - were discovered inside the spaceship and activated.

Nathan, Goliath also makes a pretty fun warden, especially if you forgo the shield in favor of a 2h weapon.

I think that we can survive without a defender. We currently have two leaders, one striker, and one controller. A second striker would likely work well, given the extra healing from two leaders. Having a second striker means killing enemies that much faster also. Any striker would be cool. Assassin, rogue, monk, ranger, sorceror. That way there's also no risk of Nathan becoming wearied from playing yet another defender in a campaign (it would be the third for him here on deadgoblins).

This is true. We will also have enough melee to clog the interior anyway. Basically, Nathan, play whatever you want.
