Unless I see some cool changes in the CB with phb3, I am choosing a cleric/invoker hybrid with Ilmater the Martyr as my deity. I will email the back story and cb files soon.

so, I'm making my barbarian now. I'm still very new to 4.0, so any advice on feat/power/whatever choices would be awesome.

So, with some spare time on my hands I found the following quote in regards to "a specific new class from PHB3 that I dare not mention or Emily might post another ridiculing comment". ;)

"Whenever anything new comes out, no matter how weak, you get someone saying "OMG broken!". This has been true in D&D for decades now."

I had to laugh and feel guilty at the same time when I read this. Not having experienced any previous versions of D&D, I'm curious if this is actually true and I'm now officially "one of those fans".

As someone with lots of 3.5 experience, I would say that that is completely true.

Indeed, it's as much a part of D&D as the d20.

The original rules in 1974 only had Fighting Man, Magic-User, and Cleric. When Thief came out in a supplement I'm pretty sure it was regarded as overpowered and game-breaking. After all, now you could just waltz past all those traps in the dungeons! ;)

"Fighting Man"? Did they seriously call it that? No wonder dnd players have had to hide from the public for decades. Maybe they thought it would some day be vindicated, just like silly super hero names (Super Man, Spider Man).

Fighting Man indeed. Check out Wikipedia for a bit of history on D&D classes.

Indeed. The Basic Set had (Human) Fighting Men, Magic-Users, Clerics, and Thieves, plus the Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling classes. Dwarf was mostly a fighting man and halfling mostly a thief, and the Elf could choose each day to act as either a fighting man or magic-user, but only one each day.

I have Nathan's CB file. Still waiting on the rest. Also, please send the images for your characters to Viktor to make the tokens, along with images for anything you will routinely be summoning. We will start once I have all those things. :)

Viktor, could you use the image of my avatar that I use now? I chose it to look like my new character.

Please post a larger jpeg in this thread or email me the jpeg. It's harder to use the small avatar images for tokens since enlarging them with the program reduces the resolution considerably and there's less wiggle room to get a nice torso shot.

Sam, Jonathan forwarded me your PC to take a look at and provide feedback. Here are some thoughts:

- Don't forget to purchase hide armor. Also, maybe some javelins just in case you need to make a ranged attack.
- You get to pick a background also to get a +2 skill bonus or make a skill a class skill you can choose to train.
- I'd take Weapon Focus (Heavy Blades) instead of Rising Fury. +1 to damage all the time will kick in more than +2 to damage the round after you kill something. Plus, they're both feat bonuses, so you really don't want to take both, as they don't stack. You'd only get the best one that would apply at a given time. Your other feat, Powerful Charge, is great for your type of barbarian since you'll be charging a bunch.
- I would not take Devastating Strike. Howling Strike does almost as much damage, can be used with a charge, and doesn't give enemies a bonus to hit you. I'd swap Devastating Strike out and add Pressing Strike to add to your mobility and gain a push ability. Your other two at-wills, Howl of Fury and Recuperating Strike, are both good picks. I might consider swapping Recuperating Strike for Howl of Fury, but that's not a huge deal.
- Your encounter (Avalanche Strike) and daily (Bloodhunt Rage) are both awesome. Good choices.

So yeah, I'd recommend changing one feat, one or two at-wills, and do a little more shopping. Otherwise, looks good. :)

One other thought on your PC Sam... as far as "feats you can take to increase damage," thinking about it more, I'd actually suggest Weapon Proficiency (Fullblade) before Weapon Focus (Heavy Blade). Greatsword is 1d10 (5.5 average), and fullblade is 2d6 (7 average, so a bump of 1.5 damage for a feat, compared to the 1 of WF(HB)), AND the fullblade is high crit, which means it does an extra 2d6 damage if you crit.

Yeah, your Str/Con/Etc all look good to me. Your barbarian should be a charging, howling, ball of steel death. :)
