You can use Versatile Expertise from PHB3 to get expertise in rods as an implement and heavy blades as a weapon in a single feat.

Here's my level 6 shielding cleric. A modified/leveled up version of the one I've played before. I noticed that the heal bonus from the feat "Healer's Implement" is still not included in the indicated bonus in charbuilder (neither in the powers tab or the character sheet). The idea of healer's implement is that you can add your holy symbol enhancement bonus to any cleric healing powers. As such, all of Mika's healing should grant 6 extra hp (4 from healer's lore which is WIS mod and 2 from magic symbol+2). So, Astral Seal will grant 13 hp to whoever hits the affected enemy and healing word will grant surge+2d6+6+(1d6+5) when including the pacifist healer feat that affects any power that allows a target to use a healing surge. I'm not sure that Healer's Implement and Pacifist Healer stack though, in which case healing word heals 2 hp less. I also took some items to keep her alive. Anyhow, bottom line...healing, healing, healing. Save the cleric, save the world.
