The summons comes in the dead of night. You awake in your room in the guild's residential hall to a stern knock at your door. Grumbling, you walk to the door and open it. Nobody is there, just a floating scroll, knocking loudly on the oaken portal. Opening it, you recognize the flowing script of the guildmaster, and goosebumps immediately form.

"You have been chosen for a very important and dangerous quest. Please pack what you need and meet in my chambers before the clock strikes two. You will learn more at that time."

Noticing that it is nearly two now, you throw the few meager possessions you own that you might need into a pack, strap on your weapons, and journey across the guild complex to the top of the Master's Tower. The door opens silently at your knock.

You find yourself in a room that is much larger from the inside than you would imagine in this part of the Tower. Candles give a soft glow to an ornate bed, bookshelves with countless aged tomes, tapestries with maps of the Old World, and plush carpets. However, it is the desk that catches your eye, for where the guildmaster should be, the chair is empty.

One by one you file into the room. Looking around, waiting for the guildmaster, you decide that this might be a good time to introduce yourself to your new companions.

The silent elf who has been carefully watching her comrades faces as they each introduce themselves steps forward and firmly plants her feet and straightens her spine. She is tall and feminine, with a strength about her and a stubborn chin. Her long brown hair flows messily around her beautiful face, and she gives a sly smile as she says..."I am Betty, of elf origin. You glance each other up and down, sizing up your new companions. Suddenly, the candles all blow out, leaving the room in complete darkness, but for the shining of a small sliver of moon outside the window. Suddenly, the table lights up with a shaft of blue fire, and the old, wizened face of the guildmaster appears in the burning column.

"Two years ago, two promising young mages, twin brothers, discovered a tomb of a lost tiefling empress in the mountains north of Loudwater. The two, Durian and Sharian, were hoping to harvest artifacts of power to bring back to their masters to study. However, something in the tomb changed them, for they took up the black robes of the necromancers. Together, the two gave undead life to those the tomb once held, seeking to live as kings with servants, while they quested for their own eternal life. However, as with most things when significant power comes into play, one got greedy. Durian fought his brother, and exiled Sharian from the tomb, taking control of the undead within for his own, more violent schemes. His forces now raid the countryside for magical artifacts Durian can use to become even more powerful. You must stop him! Any questions?"

Leaving the Guild complex, you travel into the town proper. Most of you have heard of "The Death Watch," but it is not the sort of place a self-respecting adventurer would spend his evenings. The front door of the tavern is black wood, and only a little light shines through the painted-over windows. However, the skull on the sign in front tells you that you are in the right place.

Pushing open the door, you find yourselves in a normal looking tavern. However, most of the patrons are dressed in black, and the fire in the fireplace burns green. The bartender looks up from pouring ale to address you. "What be yer pleasure, masters?" He then sees Betty. "That one would be MY pleasure. Hahaha!"

Embris looks at the bartender with his intense eyes, then cocks his head to the side a little, as if he can hear something.

"Your thoughts betray you and you are found wanting. We seek Sharian." he says curtly.

The bartender grunts, and beckons to a small door in the back of the room. Going through, you find yourselves in a dimly lit sitting room. A man in black robes sits at a desk, poring over a large dusty book. Seeing you, he quickly closes it.

"I am Sharian. You must be the adventurers sent to kill my brother. I admit, part of me wants nothing more than to see him die like the dog he is, but he is still my brother. A conundrum, no?"

Skill Challenge - Convince Sharian to Help

Challenge level 3 - Need 8 successes before 3 fails

You must convince Sharian to give you information about what you face in the Tomb of the Tiefling Empress. He possesses information about each encounter in the Tomb. For each failure on your way to your 8 successes, he will withhold information on one of them.

Recommended skills: Arcana, Bluff, Diplomacy, History, Insight, Intimidate, Religion. Aid another is in effect, but is limited to 2 successful aids per skill check. Furthermore, in an effort to keep it moving, at least 2 skill checks must take place in each round.

OOC: For the new players, a skill challenge is a sort of battle, but using your skills to accomplish your task instead of fighting. You will roll a d20, adding your skill bonus and +1 if you post within 24 hours of the person before you. I will let you know if it was successful or not. Characters may go in any order, but each character must take a turn before a character can go twice. Aid another rolls are much the same thing, but a success is a 10 or higher at all times, and an aid success gives another character a +2 to their skill check roll. For instance, if Johan wanted to aid Embris in History, he would roll his history skill: 1d20+2(+1 for 24h). If the result is 10 or higher, Embris gets +2 to a history check. Aid failures DO NOT count toward overall fails (successes also do not count toward successes), so if you do not have strong skills, you might want to mostly aid. Finally, please roleplay your checks. Nothing is more boring than Nathan saying "Zhadr rolls a Bluff check and gets a 22." If you want to bluff Sharian, roleplay it. If you want to aid Srivath, roleplay it. I hope this is clear, but please ask me (or any of the other players) if you have any questions.

Turning to Srivath ever so slightly, Betty whispers, "It seems as if Sharian still has a deep love for his brother. Do not underestimate that love, as we can use his kind heart to our advantage."

Aid another for Srivath using insight: 16 = success, giving Srivath a plus 2 to his next insight check. Insight aid for Srivath (1d20+4+1=16)

Elinar steps up and slams his fist on the table exposing his oft-used dagger to Sharian. "If you do not tell us what we need to know, I will gut you like a pig."

Embris looks hard into Sharian's eyes and says, "You have knowledge of dark arcane secrets. Some may have answered questions about life and what comes after. Necromantic energies curl around this room and chill the air. I can almost hear the whispers of souls in anguish. What such threats from the undead should we expect your brother to defend with?"

1d20+14+1=29 Arcana skill roll.

OOC: Jon, did you mean for us to each make two skill checks per post to speed things along or did you mean that at least two PC's must attempt a skill check as opposed to a skill aid?
