I hope there's some interest in a deadgoblins.com wiki, 'cause I went and created one at http://deadgoblins.com/wiki.

It uses MediaWiki, which is the same software that Wikipedia uses, along with bunches of other sites. It's quite literally a blank slate right now, but I figure we'll find good uses for it - I think backgrounds (for people, places, and things), general info, tracking stats and other non-bulletin board stuff would all work really nicely there.

Head over there and create an account (it seemed to know who I was, so I'm not sure if there's weird cookie action going on, or if there's some database sharing happening) and start playing. The "help" link on the left menu bar has a link to mediawiki's help contents, which should help get you started. I think campaign main pages should be at least majorly edited by the DMs of those campaigns, but feel free to start creating other stuff as you see fit, and have fun!

Oh, a wiki! Are you sure we are grand enough to merit one? I guess you have great expectations for our humble message board.

Thanks, Mike! This is an awesome idea.

The Living 4th Edition setting I play in on EN World uses a wiki for a lot of stuff. Here's a few samples:

Main geographic area page - http://www.enworld.org/wiki/index.php/L4W:The_Transitive_Isles

World records - http://www.enworld.org/wiki/index.php/L4W:World_Records

Deities - http://www.enworld.org/wiki/index.php/Category:L4W_Gods

My PC info -
Hrav, Bugbear Rogue 5
Growl, Warforged Druid 2
_______________
Salazar Miller - Human Sorcerer 24 - Scales of War
Azad Halim al'Zahir - Tiefling Battlemind|Paladin 7 - Points of Light
Khavak'aashta - Half-Orc Thief 5 - Eberron
Dwimmerlaik - Revenant Hexblade 2 - Dark Campaign

That's cool. It would have been nice to have that up BEFORE I posted all of that Eberron info. ;)

Using a wiki site is cool. Unfortunately, what I know is nothing when it comes to creating them.

I have several obvious threads from PoL that could be transferred there (chronology, geography, both dramatis personae, statistics, handouts, journal). Is that the idea behind starting the wiki? Would you guys prefer to have all that info on a separate webpage? It seems to me that a wiki page would be more versatile, in terms of linking, navigating, and subthreads.

If anybody has any great tips regarding creating wiki pages (apart from looking at the help section), I would appreciate it.

Is there a way to use wiki pages to automatically track die roll stats by linking to to invisible castle? (only if you guys want to track minutiae like crits, flubs, etc)

Last question for now. Can absolutely anybody in the world register for the deadgoblins wiki and edit?

I like posting that sort of stuff on the wiki.

Mike, I wanted to upload a picture to the wiki. MediaWiki's help page:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Managing_files

...says there should be an "upload file" link on the Toolbox sidebar, but I don't see one. Do you have that option turned off? Can you turn it on? Posting pictures would be really handy.

I added the "about" page and my user page:

I've updated the main wiki page to have some basic info on the games being run here.

Okay, so I messed around with the wiki a little and created a very basic Points of Light start page. I am still working on it. I tried importing/embedding an image but failed. I guess I'll have to read the help (sigh). Thanks Gary for updating the main page, I creating the pol main page off of that.

I also don't know how to indent, change fonts, font color, or font size (sigh).

Don't expect anything cool to appear anytime soon.

At least I figured out how to create an external link and I imagine an internal one is similar.

Once I've created a link to a page with the PC's playing, I'll let you guys put your own character in there. There must also be a way to have some main links on the left hand column of the wiki's main page and then multiple sub-links. In time...

I need to configure image upload, but it's certainly possible. The wiki really is a blank slate, and it can be pretty much anything we want it to be. Gary's pretty savvy with wikis (probably moreso than me), so he's a good person to ask.

Eventually, I'd like some standards for stuff, but for now, we can put content there as we create it.

I'd suggest poking around the EN World wiki I linked to above to learn new editing tricks. I think it's the same (or similar) wiki software, and you can probably steal formatting and such.

After messing around some more the our wiki page, it seems relatively straightforward to create pages, link pages, automatic table of contents. Haven't looked at Gary's enworld pages for ideas yet though.

Since Mike mentioned having layout standards, I may wait before doing any more. Images are also kind of important, but if we can't have those, we could always link back to deadgoblins (although it would defeat the purpose of decentralizing from our pbp) or do without.

Image upload has been enabled. Try not to crash the server - web images should be under 200K, at the very most.

Cool, thanks Mike. I just uploaded a title image for Points of Light in the POL main page. It's only 9 kb. Figured out how to center it from looking at Gary's suggested enworld pages.

Now we can really organize things like maps, handouts, etc.

However, I'm wondering if we want to totally decentralize drom deadgoblins. It seem to me that it might be nice to keep certain things on here and not clutter up the wiki. For example, Emily has always posted dungeon maps and updated them as needed. I don't think we want that on the wiki. Likewise, I'm not sure we would want each an every image there.

I'm thinking that having PC images, imprtant NPC images and some world geography images there might be enough. Also, some decorative banner images might be nice here and there. Most of the other stuff to document (adventure journal, background stories, etc would just be text anyhow). Does anyone feel that player handouts (digital version that is) should be on the wiki or restricted to deadgoblins? (e.g. the bloody map of the Nentir Vale that I posted in Points of Light: Collection of Records/Handouts thread)

Are these the kinds of standards you were thinking of?

I think it's really up to each DM/player to decide. There's certainly going to be overlap, but some things just lend themselves really well to the wiki - histories of NPCs and in-world places, for example. Lots of times I think something along the lines of "OK, which one was Councilman Troyas - what'd he do for us?", and a wiki would be a great centralized place for such things.

We could all also flush out our characters (both for ourselves and others) on the Wiki. And gameplay stats for campaigns are much better served on a wiki than a constantly edited entry in a bulletin board.

Dungeon maps, specifics of gameplay, etc. are best on the main site, just because wikis aren't really meant for ongoing/continuing information like that. And the Wiki's not really a place to just dump or upload images for the sake of it. Maps of the world are perfectly acceptable on the wiki, though.

The standards I'm thinking of are more technical - how to name things, how internal links should work, etc. For some things, this should be wiki-wide, but for others, it can be up the DM of a campaign on how things look.

I like what you're doing with the PoL campaign on the wiki, Viktor. Looks good.

Here's another great MediaWiki-powered site to steal code, templates, etc. from:

Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki - http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Portal:Main

I'd like to make the front page here look a bit like that, with separate boxes for each campaign, each containing player/character lists, maybe.

Thanks. I'm experimenting at this point and have a ton to learn. I looked at the star trek page you showed a like the following aspects.

- The boxes are neat and make organization easier.
- the picture icons are cool
- the different background colors are neat
- the different colored fonts are a nice idea
- having the subheadings listed at the top to not need to return to the main page is nice

Lots of work ahead...

Does anyone know how to change font color of regular typed text in the wiki?
