Mike, will we also have access to buy whatever we need back at the school?

Good question....I suggest we use our money pool to have every PC carry two healing potions.

I read Gary's question about how much gold we have and Mike's response, but am not quite clear how much the party ends up with after all expenses. Every PC still had a little left-over gold after character creation, which I think we should discount. So maybe tally what we found and earned (4000+), then subtract the cost of two healing potions per character (should be less than 400 if some PC's still have theirs), then divide by four I think.

Alfred used up his single healing potion on Gharnash, so he would need two (100 gold).

Is this an okay idea?

Gharnash still has one potion.

Also, Mike, do we get to keep the Ghostphase Amulet? If so, somebody might want to use that (someone with a high dex for the stealthy aspect of it, maybe).

I didn't use any potions. Forgot we had them! ;) I'm fine with potions coming out of the party gold before it's split, though. They are a party resource.

Curator only bought 1 healing potion at the start of the adventure, so he needs another to get up to 2.

Laz bought 1 as well, and did not use it. So we would need 5 total to get everyone in the group to 2.

Plus, for the next few levels, potions are more valuable than any other surge we have.

5 healing potions will cost 250 gold.

Josh is right, since we're all arcane characters, the 10 hp from a healing potion is better than any other healing we have, certainly better than a second wind. Alfred will be at 30 HP at level 2, with healing surge value of 7.

Do you think we should have 3 potions each then? The would cost a total 450 to buy 9 potions. It would reduce each PC's portion of the loot by 112.50 gold.

In the last adventure, we used 1 healing potion. Assuming we will be coming back to the school between adventures (with the item we find), I can't see us using more than 8 in adventure 2. We can always buy more at that point.

Now if you wanted to use potions more often in combat for the extra healing, that is a different conversation. I personally would rather spend the gold on an item or 2.

I agree with Jonathan. Two potions per PC is plenty.

I recommend having 2 healing potions each, though there's a point in battle where you just need to rest too - I think the insurance is nice, though.

You do not get to keep the amulet. Artimus is sending you on missions to recover and deliver magic items of unusual strength, not keep them =)

I'm not sure what you all spent on the basics, but you got 4000gp from the adventure, and 100 each from Artimus. that's 1,100 each, minus your expenses.

In Scales of War, we handwave small expenses like food, inns, and ammo. Might I suggest we do so here? It's unlikely such amounts will affect the bottom line much, and that'll be even more true as we level up.

I don't disagree with that idea. You're right that as time goes on, it really won't matter much. Let's say, then, that each of you stole/earned 1,000GP from this mission, then, just to make it easy (you had expenses like travel and potions that I'll count as coming from the 100GP Artimus gave you).

Good point about the potions, we don't even have three each in SoW.

I like Mike's idea, 1000 GP each and we squandared the allowance from Artimus. So that's actually 4000-250 (five potions) = 3750/4 = 937.50 each. Alternatively, if you find you need a little bit more gold to buy things, we can buy fewer potions, but should at the very least buy one for Alfred so we have four total (that would be 3950/4=987.50 left for each).

Mike, is the suggested modification to Alfred (post #25) okay with you (tome of readiness switch, etc)?

A level 1 item is 360 GP, and a level 2 item is 520 GP, total of 880 GP. So 937.5 GP is enough for me to make both a level 1 and level 2 item for anyone that wants something.

Also, with Curator 143-Theta around, you don't have to worry about investing in an item just to toss it later. He can upgrade an item just for the cost of the difference (make your level 1 magic dagger +1 a level 2 vicious dagger +1, for example, for only 520 - 360 = 160 GP).

Does Curator have a level max on that upgrading?

How many SP in a GP? I don't think it will allow us to do .5 GP. That total is fine with me.

Curator can create any item of his level or lower. So if you want a level 3 or 4 item (we each have enough GP for one of those), at this point you'd have to find one for sale in town. Or you could have me make a level 1 or 2 version of the item, and upgrade to the higher level item once we reach that level.

Also, there are 10 SP in a GP.

EDIT: There's also a feat for artificers called Master Crafter that lets you create a magic item your level + Int mod or lower. I won't have room for that until probably level 8.

Ok cool. Once Mike tells me if I got something off the wishlist, Gharnash will head for the store.

Also, Mike, I will be retraining Gharnash's breath weapon and resistance for fire.

Viktor, I think the new Alfred is fine.

I haven't entirely decided on how to deal with magic item distribution yet in game. In general, I think Artimus' storehouse is a good reason to have things on hand. This level, however, y'all stole way, way more gold than you should earn for your level, so I might have the all-knowing, all-seeing caretaker of the vaults of Wisenstone grant items appropriately (and you buy stuff on your own).

There may be a special quest-specific item available for the group to use/share, depending on the specifics of the next adventure. Also, given the holidays and busy schedules, we might not start the next adventure in earnest until the new year - just a head's up.

Is it possible to wear leather armor without having leather proficiency? Charbuilder seems to allow it legally. It then subtracts two points from reflex. Are there any other disadvantages? It might be worth trading two reflex points for two AC points for Alfred with +1 leather armor of some type.

You also take a -2 penalty to attack rolls while wearing armor you aren't proficient in. See PHB1 page 212.
