An evil Wind stirs in the Nentir Vale.

It blows in harshly from the south and travels up the Nentir River to Fallcrest. It is strong enough to seemingly push a young man off the cliffs to his death, at the edge of the Falls of Fallcrest. Lingering a moment to savor the loss of life…and perhaps even the gain of death, The Wind blows on around the Vale, from Harkenwold to Hammerfast, then bounds off the Dawnforge mountains in the east.

As it streaks west on its way to Thunderspire, The Wind blows through the Five-league Inn, causing its shutters to rattle loudly. A few of the Inn’s guests begin turning fitfully in their beds, as if suddenly plagued by terrible nightmares.

Moving on, The Wind reaches the summit of Thunderspire and circles amidst ominous looking clouds. Lightning bolts strike the base of the mountain repeatedly, as if trying to gain entrance to its depths. A family of Halfling traders quickly seek shelter in tunnels near the surface.

Not tarrying too long, the seemingly possessed Wind, now whispering words in a sinister language long forgotten, speeds further west towards the Stonemarch range.

Purposefully…Urgently…Hungrily…

Frightened children, returning home before sunset, gaze skywards from the fields outside Winterhaven as The Wind passes overhead. In the town itself, old sage gazes out the window of his tower. His eyes move northwards along the sky, as if following the passage of The Wind. He shudders as the flames in his fireplace suddenly extinguish.

Even orcs and goblins will stay indoors tonight. Only the dead seem unperturbed by this strangest of winds.

It eventually slows down, having found its destination amidst the ruins of an old keep. “It is time…….”

1 - That intro text totally sounds like Wheel of Time (in a good way). Did you write that or was it including in Keep on the Shadowfell? Can't remember if you said you'd read WoT.

2 - Awesome video. Makes me want to kick butt.

3 - The music in the video is from World of Warcraft. I'd have recognized it anyway, but that actually even happens to be what's in my car CD player right now. ;)

I am glad that you like it. Can you tell I've already invested a lot of time in this campaign?

Having never played World of Warcraft, I did not recognize the tune. How funny it's in your car CD player Gary. It's a great theme song. You'll notice by the date at the end of the video that it was made a while ago and unfortunately I cannot claim to have the necessary skill to put it together. I would have actually modified the words and font color a little if I knew how. However, I have read or listened to all of the Wheel of Time books, save the latest by Brandon Sanderson. I will wait until he finishes the concluding trilogy before starting them. Since his Mistborn trilogy is so perfectly coherent I think he'll be able to pull it off. The intro to the video is not quite the same I think (see below).

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again."

As for where I found the video. Just google "Nentir Vale" and you will find...a ton of hits, including youtube videos. Most of those hits are other groups playing at various domains, with chronicles of their adventures, so please do not search too much to avoid spoilers. Enough time has passed since the first adventures of this campaign have been released that I have been able to accumulate a lot of additional material and read up on player ideas and feedback. I actually began toying wit Obsidian Portal myself for this campaign, but felt DeadGoblins fulfills more of our needs.

And yes, somebody either had tons of spare time or is very adept at movie clipping. The images of the heroes, heroines, and enemies look quite cool and I may try tracking some of them down. If you happen to recognize any, please tell me the source.

Edeya shoves a few more berries in her mouth, gulps them down, and with a sigh of resignation moves to see what is going on. She quietly positions herself behind the willow tree and pears out, without revealing her presence, to assess the situation.

Edeya slips silently between the berry bushes and through the hanging willow tree strands. Peering out from below the tree, she can see three nervous looking kobolds, armed with javelins and wearing hide armor, with their backs to her. They appear to be standing in roughly a circle around a large goblin, wearing chainmail and a battleaxe, that is grabbing a human woman dressed almost entirely in white. The goblin is trying to tie the woman's hands behind her back. At her feet underneath the willow tree, Edeya also notices a well-used fire pit.

User posted image

Notes:
1) Trees and yellow bushes are difficult terrain.
2) Edeya is standing amidst the large willow tree, which is also difficult terrain.
3) All five strangers are still unaware of Edeya's presence.

Looking carefully at the kobolds' and goblin's body language and seeing the fear in the woman's eyes, Edeya correctly intuits that the woman will likely be killed or worse by these fiends.

OOC: Whatever the heck is a tinyadventure??? ;)

EDIT: Added Edeya's evaluation of the situation and corrected the number of strangers in the notes section.

After assessing the situation and determining that the woman is helpless and in dire need, Edeya quickly and silently springs into action. She deftly moves out from behind the willow, circles round the kobolds and moves in front of the large goblin. She kicks the goblin in the stomach and sends him reeling into one of the kobolds. As her foot leaves the goblin's stomach, her fist connects with another kobold. All damage is non-lethal.

Move: As part of Drunken Monkey, ignore difficult terrain and gain +2 to speed. J8-K7-L5-L4-K3-J3-I4.
Standard: Drunken Monkey hits Will 18 for 8 damage to Large Goblin. On a hit, slide goblin one square to G4. Then as a free action, the goblin makes a basic attack on kobold B. Drunken Monkey vs large goblin (1d20+5=18, 1d8+4=8 )
Free: Centered Flurry of Blows. On a hit during her turn, Edeya also delivers 6 damage to Kobold C.

In a seemingly wanton weave around the surprised kobolds and goblin, Edeya ends near the large goblin, kicking it hard for 8 damage. As it's pushed back a step, it heaves in an attempt to catch it's breath. Unfortunately, this also causes his battleaxe to decapitate a nearby kobold. Faster than anyone can see, Edeya follows up on her attack with a flurry of motion, pummeling another kobold senseless.

Recovering all too quickly, the goblin grunts some words to the kobold in a language Edeya doesn't understand and it circles around partially, stopping next to Edeya and readies an attack. The large goblin then moves back next to the woman, also flanking Edeya with the kobold, who takes the opportunity to stab its javelin and miss. The goblin however, strikes true with its battleaxe for 8 damage.

The woman manages to free her still loosely tied hands and reaches for a holy symbol of Erathis hanging underneath her shirt.

OOC: Do you want to trigger iron mind? Do you want to handle it case by case in general, or automatically the first time she is hit every encounter? Also, for the free basic attack that enemies make with drunken monkey, it specifies a bonus to their attack equal to the PC's wis modifier. Please help me for the first character level or two, by spelling out what the bonus is. Eventually, I'll know the powers nearly as well as you guys. You could also add that info in the stat block if you want.

Initiative:
-->Edeya: 16/24
Kobold C:
Large Goblin: down 8
Frightened Woman: 12/12

Edeya hopes this will be her only physical fight today and decides to let these goblins feel the full force of her strength. She pirouettes and spins in a tight circle, her limbs jabbing the foes as she turns. All damage is non-lethal.

OOC: I think I'd like to specify the use of Iron Mind, not automatically have it trigger with the first attack. Also, I assumed the kobold were minions so did not specify damage since I figured if I hit they were toast. I will in the future and I put it in my stat block.

Move: none
Standard: Masterful Spiral hits Reflex 25 on Large Goblin and Reflex 21 on kobold C for 15 damage. Masterful Spiral vs Large Goblin and Kobold C (1d20+5+1=25, 1d20+5+1=21, 3d8+4=15)
Free: Centered Flurry of Blows. On a hit during her turn, Edeya also delivers 6 more damage to Large Goblin.
Action Point: Five Storms hits Reflex 11 for 8 damage to Large Goblin Five Storms vs Large Goblin (1d20+5+1=11, 1d8+4=8 )
Ready: Iron Mind, When hit by an attack, she gains a +2 bonus to all defenses until end of her next turn.
  •  Edeya

With ultra-quick kicks and punches, Edeya knocks out the last kobold and sends a mighty blow at the goblin. Despite her intent not to inflict lethal damage, blood begins to flow out of it's nose. The goblin howls in pain and anger, cursing Edeya in unknown words. It attacks again, digging into her side for 7 damage despite her increased will to resist injury. Both goblin and githzerai blood now drip to the forest floor.

Seemingly annoyed at not decapitating it's enemy, the goblin reluctantly takes a step away, preparing to flee but not wanting to turn it's back to it's dangerous foe.

Eyes wide with shock and fear, the woman in white begins praying to Erathis. A white glow emanates from her holy symbol, but then flickers and diminishes.

OOC: Okay, iron mind at your request. Thanks for adding the +4 to attack for drunken monkey in your stat block (it made a difference last turn). I added toughness to your current HP in this encounter.

-->Edeya: 14/29, bloodied, +2 def until end of next turn

Deciding to be charitable, Edeya lets the goblin run away. "Be gone with you!" She says in a stern voice. She holds up her hands in attack position, showing the goblin that she is ready to hit him if he comes near.
All damage is non-lethal.

Move: to H3
Standard: Ready action if goblin comes within range. Dragon's Tail hits For 9 on Large Goblin for 8 damage. 1d20+5+1=9, 1d6+4=6
Free: Centered Flurry of Blows. On a hit during her turn, Edeya also delivers 6 more damage to Large Goblin.

Understanding Edeya's body language, if not her words, the goblin backs away one step and then moves away down the dirt path as quick as possible.

The young woman is still clutching her holy symbol in one fist, the whites of her knuckles showing. After watching the goblin run away, she slowly turns to Edeya, eyes still wide in fear, clearly unsure about the githzerai's intentions. "Thank...thank you..." she says to the monk.

Edeya clearly senses the woman's fear and distrust and ponders what to say or do to ease her discomfort.

Note: Try to gain the woman's trust by any means necessary. Actions/skills can have positive or negative impact. There are no wrong choices.

OOC: XP and rewards, if any (haven't decided yet since this is an intro), will be given at the end of the mini-adventure.

The monk sinks down into the ground, wincing a bit as she holds her injured side. "My name is Edeya. Are you alright now?" She says simply.

Still visibly shaking, the woman watches Edeya's movements carefully, frowning. Making up her mind, she sits down on a small boulder nearby and answers. "I am uninjured. At least physically. My name is Daria. What are...people are you from?" She looks at Edeya's injury with conceren, but seems to be afraid.

OOC: Up to you. I'm experimenting here. RP and/or skill checks can affect the situation. As a simple example, if your words, actions, or skill roll use intimidation or are intimidating, then you are not likely to help the woman trust you. On the other hand, if she was an ogre, then intimidating acts would help gain respect.

Realizing that the woman is still nervous and unsure, Edeya says "Please, do not be afraid of me. I mean you no harm." She pauses thinking how best to put things and surprises herself at how well her words come out Diplomacy (1d20+1-1=18 ) "Let me try to explain. I am a Githzerai PinYin monk. You probably haven't met any of us before, so I understand why you might be uneasy. Let me reassure you. My order honors the tenets of Justice, Scholarship and Kindness. If there is anything I can do to aid you, please allow me."

Edeya then thinks back and remembers the woman fingering a necklace. "What is that you were holding? And why did those goblins try to waylay you?"

Daria listens intently and visibly relaxes at Edeya's words and eloquence. Biting her lower, lip she appears to be pondering and then purses them as if having made up her mind about something. She gets up from her boulder and moves over to kneel next to Edeya, showing her the necklace of Erathis. I have to admit, I'm very relieved to hear your words. I was afraid that you might also have some reason to ambush me here. This is the symbol of the goddess Erathis, whom I serve. Her tenants are not unlike your PinYin philosophy in that we too believe in lawfulness, the pursuit of innovation, and bringing civilization to where there is none."

She then pauses and gently removes Edeya's hands from her most serious side wound. "Please allow me to repay you somewhat for your help by easing your wounds." Praying silenetly to Erathis, Daria's hands glow with warmth that infuses Edeya's injuries and helps to heal them.

Sitting back and crossing her legs, Daria looks at the two unconscious kobolds and tries not to see the decapitated one. "I do not know why I was attacked, but it seemed like they were waiting for me and were intent on capturing me instead of harming me."

OOC: Daring, but nice roll. Daria's healing grants an additional 1d6 hp to your healing surge.

"Thank you," Edeya says as her side heals with Daria's touch.

Edeya then tries to remember if she knows anything about Erathis Religion (1d20+1+1=10) "I have heard of you god, but would like to learn more." Then a thought occurs to her "Where were you heading? Perhaps I can accompany you and you can share more of your god's philosophy with me. I can also try to keep you safe on your journey."

Daria smiles warmly at Edeya's suggestion to travel together. "That sounds like a great idea. I'd feel a lot better with your company, knowing now that these woods aren't as safe as they used to be. I'd also be happy to talk to you about my beliefs although I'm still a novice in our order. I am very curious about your PinYin philosophy too and feel that the two might have a lot in common."

She hesitates a moment, then speaks on. "I was on my way back to Fallcrest after having spent a month's pilgrimage travelling from the south." She looks at the kobolds again in concern. "When I came into this clearing these monsters jumped out at me. I tried to run away, but that large one came out to block my path and grabbed me. This is the first time I've heard of monsters attacking a priestess." She seems genuinely confused.

At Daria's words about PinYin and Erathis being similar, Edeya recalls learning that followers of Erathis believe first and foremost in bringing civilization to the world around them. To do so, invention, archictecture, cultivation, and law are vital components.

EDIT: Included Edeya's recollection about Erathis.

"Good, I'll go with you." She then has a thought "Oh, excuse me." Edeya ducks out back across the clearing to the berry bushes. She creates a makeshift pouch out of the folds of her tunic and stashes some berries in it. Then she comes back to Daria, "Right, I'm ready. Now tell me, does your Erathis house of worship have a library? What books might you recommend for me?"

Daria waits patiently for Edeya to return and answers. "Yes, we have a wonderful library. Not as great as some of the libraries I've heard tell of in cities such as Overlook to the far south, but our temple also houses a shrine to Ioun and Moradin. Ioun can be easily understood as the goddess of knowledge, while Moradin is the god of crafting and architecture, more or less. I really couldn't say which books you would find most interesting, since I've only just met you, but one of my favorites is "Fallcrest during the Golden Age". It has beautiful illustrations and tells of the time when the Nerathi people colonized these lands and the growth of Fallcrest."

Daria begins leading the way out of the clearing, making sure to walk a large circle around the kobold bodies.

OOC: If you feel you've done all you need to do here, then we are good to go.
