You wake up and find a note has been slipped under your door. The note says "The Guildmaster has requested an audience with you. Be there by the time the clock strikes nine." You know the Guildmaster will not be happy if you are late, so you quickly gather your things and make your way to his offices. By the time the gong strikes for the ninth time, you see there are four others besides you:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Thranduin Wildleaf, Elf Seeker (Gary)
Alysandra Novakri, Kalashtar Paladin (Viktor)
Jauthak, Goliath Warden (Josh)
Thaelan, Dwarf Shaman (Nathan)
Korg, Half-Orc Rogue (Marek)

The Guildmaster has not yet entered the room, so you decide to introduce yourself...

Eyes shifting back and forth, a dwarf with a slight build breaks the silence.

"I am Thaelin the Clanless, a former woodsguide. Though new to this guild, trust that I will fight alongside you with courage. I've not properly met any of you, though I believe our elven companion and I have seen each other from afar in the woods from time to time."

"Yes," he admits, "you do look familiar. It's not often one of your people are seen in the woods with any sense of where you're going."

A female human, armored in shining, clean platemail with hues of gold and wearing a grayish cowled cloak looks at everyone with intense eyes and a proud expression. She seems to be trying to peer into each of your souls, although you are uncertain what insight she gleans from her appraisal. All of a sudden, she raises her hands to her head and flings back the cowl of her cloak, resting her right hand on the pommel of her sword. With a twinkle in her eyes and a slight smile she says. "My name is Alysandra Novakri. I am a Paladin of the Goddess Sune. I recently came to Loudwater upon hearing that this frontier city may require aid in vanquishing the evil and depraved. You may recall that the southern wall of the city was breached by some marauding goblins a couple months back. Sune's loving gaze smiled upon this city that day, for I and some other stalwart strangers were at hand to repel the invasion. At the time, Lady Moonfire believed there may have been a greater threat behind the attack so I stayed to help in any way I could. It seems there was naught more to fear though, so I decided to petition the Guildmaster to accept my services in lieu."

She pauses and again looks at everyone in turn, with a fierce and determined expression. "I sense that each of you has potential for honor and bravery. If you live up to that potential, you will find that I shall be a loyal and loving protector to you all." she finishes with a cheeky grin. You are not quite sure how exactly she meant those last words, but feel it may be best not to disappoint her.

A tall, musclebound goliath warden in dusty hide armor with a huge greatsword that seems to have captured the essence of fire in its blade stands in the back of the room and observes the crowd. He finally speaks up and says "My name is Jauthak and I am a warden of the land of Akanul." After pausing a moment he grins slightly and quips "Glad to have your approval Alysandra. I think that we might just be able to make this relationship work. I have been fighting beasts and evil men my whole life and I am looking forward to finally having some people to fight by my side."

OOC: Feel free to talk amongst yourselves before Marek responds. I want to make sure everyone has introduced themselves before moving on...

As for the rules, for the new people: You can use Invisible Castle to make your die rolls. If you haven't made an account, I recommend it, as it allows you to make comments on your rolls. Make sure to put a link in your post to the roll you made. It can help (although is not required for this delve) to note what your bonuses are on each roll. If you post within 24 hours of your turn starting, you get a +1 bonus to d20 rolls. If you do not post within 3 days, I will take your turn or ask someone else to. Also, I want to institute a rule in this particular delve that if you miss your turn (the 3 days has gone by), the next time your turn comes up, you will only have 1 day before I have someone else take it. That way, if someone doesn't check for a week, we don't have to wait that whole time to get two rounds finished.

After the introductions are finished, an ancient and formidable looking fey steps into the room from the opposite door. "Ah, you are all here. Let's get down to business then." He seems to look through you before moving onto another of the five guildmembers.

"The trade route that comes through the desert west of Secomber has had a string of vicious attacks along it. The attackers always manage to disappear, however, before the next group can reach them. A guildmember was able to track them to a small cave hideout. You will go there and eliminate this threat. As a reward, your standing in the guild will increase, as well as your pay grade. Any questions?"

Alysandra nods in agreement. "Yes. If a someone managed to track them, then they should know what kind of tracks they were." she says with certainty.

Korg perks up and eyebrow at the mention of increase in pay grade, but remains silent awaiting an answer to Thranduin's question. Greed, after all, can never supersede caution.

"Ah, good question. I knew I picked the correct group for this assignment. The raiders appear to be made up of gnolls."

"Gnolls preying upon travellers? Such deeds must be punished and I think I know how best to do so." says the paladin, as she recalls past experience and stories about the creatures.

Nature and Dungeoneering rolls about gnolls. (1d20+6+1=24, 1d20+6+1=10)

  •  For Alysandra only:
    • Quote
Gnolls are nomadic race of hyena-like humanoids. The description of their attacks on caravans sounds like gnolls, as they raze everything and leave no survivors. Any corpses left behind are typically gnawed on. Gnolls often decorate their armor and encampments with the bones of their victims. They wear patchwork armor and wield weapons stolen from their victims. Gnolls donít bargain or parley, and they canít be bribed or reasoned with. Gnolls keep hyenas as pets and hunting animals. They also work with demons.

The dwarf scrunches his face in irritation.
"Guildmaster, I do not know how things are ran here, but you waste our time. Surely you know more, and can provide a map to this hideout. What did the scout discover? At the very least, the scout should have returned with a rough count of their numbers, equipment, and perimeter defenses. Additionally, knowing their raiding and ambush tactics may prove useful."

Dungeoneering (1d20+9=24)
Nature and Insight (1d20+12=16, 1d20+12=19)

Alysandra decides to answer for the Guildmaster. "A tracker would be a fool to actually enter a hideout with Goddess knows what number of enemies inside! Likewise, there would be no way of knowing the number of gnolls inside. As far as equipment goes, we can expect them to have all manner of armor and weapons they have scavenged. Knowing gnolls, one thing is immediately certain. They will fight to the death and are not beneath sacrificing their hyena pets or cavorting with the Abyss."

"Thaelan, those are also good questions. The tracker was by himself and his mission was simply to find their lair and what little he could. He was specifically told not to take undue risks, as the most important thing was finding the lair. From his information, I am confident the 5 of you should have little trouble. As for perimeter defenses, the tracker found nothing to indicate such. It is a well hidden, small pyramid in the middle of the desert, without much need for defenses. With any luck, they never realized the tracker was there and have not seen fit to guard the door.

"Gnolls all fight the same. As Alysandra said, they fight to the death and they try to overwhelm their foes. And of course, you will have a map. It would do the guild no good for you to get lost on your way to do the guild's work."
With that, the Guildmaster hands the map to Thranduin, "I think this would be best in your hands."

Clearly not enjoying the paladin's rebuke, Thaelan speaks to his boots. "Alysandra, it was not my intent to imply the scout should have met his doom trying to retrieve more information. I was hoping he might have observed guard changes or a raid party leaving. It's not like gnolls are going to leave witnesses behind with any information. Guildmaster, do you know if the trade route is used to convey heavy arms?"

Looking up with a crooked smile, he says to Korg, "At least it sounds like they are overconfident in their hidden lair. With some luck, we'll all get paid soon enough." With that, the dwarf reaches out as to clasp the half-orc on the shoulder, but thinks better of it.

"The map looks well drawn, Thranduin. I suspect we'll find this hideout without difficulty.

"Thaelan, this is a major trade route and there certainly are weapons along it. Howver, the gnolls have thus far kept to smaller targets."
