OOC: Assuming everyone surges to full before going up the stairs...

Rested, the group moves up the stairs to the next floor. As they come up the stairs (squares F3 and F4 are the first squares on this floor, the rest of you are still coming up the stairs and have to go to F3 or F4 before moving elsewhere), they see a goblin on a bejeweled throne, and a bugbear, who back up into glowing circle of runes as soon as the party appears.

Sunlight fills this room. The roof is gone, and the spiral staircase continues up to nowhere. Much of the southern half of the room has fallen away. A large stone throne sits to the west with a pile of soiled bedding directly across from it. A circle of runes, interrupted by a gap along one of its sides, glows faintly on the floor.

"Come and die, fools!" the bugbear roars.

User posted image

Illumination: The room is open to the bright sunlight above.

Falling: Most of the southern half of the room has long since collapsed. There is no wall along either of the diagonal edges or the southernmost edge. Anyone who steps or is pushed off the edge falls 40 feet to the ground below (4d10 damage).

Spiral Staircase: The spiral staircase (located in G3, G4, H3, and H4) once climbed 20 feet up to the next floor, which has long since fallen. The staircase provides cover.

"Why have you stopped moving, what do you see up there?" asks Zrith from inside the spiral staircase.

OOC: Don't understand the staircase. If it's spiral and F3, F4 are the first steps out of the spiral, does that mean some of us are still in the staircase underneat this floor? Also, since it's stairs they presumably are difficult terrain and we can't see which direction the spiral goes. Can you please specify how many moves it would take to get where. I'm assuming Zrith is at the bottom of the spiral since he takes the rear position always. Where can he go to with move 6? Can he see anything from his current position?

So, I will delay his turn until after Ishara since I'm off to class now.

OOC: Those of you in G3/G4/H4/H4 can see the room and make attacks. You have cover from enemies not on the stairs. No difficult terrain here. I'm abstracting the process of climbing stairs in favor of ease of play. I'm also going to keep it at Zrith's turn, since letting the enemy go ahead of you is a big deal. With Marek out of town till Sunday night and Adam out of town till Tuesday, there's no reason to rush the first part of the round.

Gerren looks carefully around the room.

Perception, nature, arcana, history

perception, nature, arcana, history (1d20+5+1=7, 1d20+10+1=26, 1d20+4+1=23, 1d20+11+1=32) Perception crit miss, but then Gerren opens his eyes. 26 nature, 23 arcana (was meant to be on the circle, but then I noticed this cloud-ish thing, so new arcana for that arcana on cloud (1d20+4+1=19) is 19), and CRIT history check.

  •  Gerren:
Perception 7: You see nothing. Not even the nose in front of your face. :)

Nature 26: You recall a great deal about the foes before you.

      Bugbear Lore

A character knows the following information with a successful Nature check.

DC 15: A bugbear has little tolerance for talk and resorts to conversation only if the advantage of doing so is apparent. The most common situation is when foes are too strong to challenge openly.

DC 20: Bugbears often decapitate their foes to honor their greatest hero, Hruggek, who is known to decapitate his enemies.

      Goblin Lore

A character knows the following information with a successful Nature check.

DC 15: Goblins are cowardly and tend to retreat or surrender when outmatched. They are fond of taking slaves and often become slaves themselves.

DC 20: Goblins sleep, eat, and spend leisure time in shared living areas. Only a leader has private chambers. A goblin lair is stinking and soiled, though easily defensible and often riddled with simple traps designed to snare or kill intruders.

Arcana 23: The "cloud thing" is the pile of soiled bedding. So I'll apply your arcana check to the circle. You're able to tell that the circle has a beneficial healing effect for anyone within the runes.

History 32: You recall a story of another goblin tribe that infested similar ruins. That tribe, you remember, made alliances with cruel wolves who aided in their mischief.

"The circle has some kind of healing aura on it," Gerren tells everyone. "And watch out for wolves. Goblins in places like this have been known to make alliances with them."

OOC: Well are there any magical properties on the soiled bedding? Hahaha.

Being exposed to the elements high up on this tower, Zrith senses a storm coming. He first hurls a reddish-black orb at the goblin underboss, hoping to mark him as a target for everyone. He then twirls his hands around in a circular motion. With increasing speed of his hand movements, a whirlwind seemingly picks up from nowhere and coalesces into a small tornado that buffets the underboss and bugbear.

"Yesssss...yessss..." hisses the drow. As he continues with even more energy of his body, the cowl of his cloak falls back revealing a churning fog of clouds and lightning swirl in his pupils. He looks skyward and the sunny sky darkens with ominous looking clouds that begin to descend upon the tower.

"Thunder and lightning, very, very frightening! You will all be crushed and obliterated!!!!" he cackles while his entire body shakes. The noise of thunder is almost unbearable as the howling tempest descends upon the exposed tower and violently assails any creature caught within.

Darkfire on goblin underboss. (1d20+10+1=27)

Whirlwind against goblin underboss and bugbear (+2 from darkfire comb adv against underboss). (1d20+8+1+2=24, 1d20+8+1=25, 1d10+9=11)

Howling Tempest against goblin underboss and bugbear (+2 from darkfire comb adv against underboss). (1d20+8+1+2=23, 1d20+8+1=16, 2d6+9=16)

OOC: Darkfire on goblin underboss: 27 vs Reflex (until end of Zrith's next turn, all attacks by anyone against underboss have combat advantage and it can't gain bonuses from concealment or invisibility.

Whirlwind burst 1 centered on B3 rolls 24 vs FORT against underboss and 25 vs FORT against bugbear, doing 11 damage on a hit and knocking prone.

Action Point: Howling Tempest burst 1 centered on B3 rolls 23 vs FORT against underboss and 16 vs FORT against bugbear, doing 16 damage on a hit. Also, on a hit the target is deafened (save ends) and I can slide the target dex modifier squares (3). If the underboss is hit, I will slide it two spaces to A4 and then the third space to A5 off the tower. If the bugbear is hit, I will slide it to B4 and then to A5 off the tower.

NOTE: The howling tempest zone remains until the end of Zrith's next turn. Each creature starting it's turn in the zone takes 5 thunder damage. I can choose to sustain minor the zone (which I will probably do) and also move it around. Consider yourselves warned.

EDIT: I suppose the howling tempest attacks are both at -2 to hit if the targets were knocked prone beforehand by the whirlwind. Also, I any invisible creatures are in the attack one, they would also be attack of course.

Zrith illuminates the underboss in bright light, then unleashes a terrible storm atop the tower. The bugbear is only battered by the wind, but the underboss is both deafened by the thunder and pounded by the wind. The goblin teeters towards the edge, but falls down and grabs the ledge before falling off the tower's edge.

Save vs Falling (1d20=14)

In addition, a howl of pain sounds from behind the throne at the first whirlwind...

Whirlwind (1d20+8+1=29) / Crit (1d6=2)

...as a wolf is severely beaten by the wind (CRIT! for 21 damage and prone versus a previously hidden wolf), and then...

Howling Tempest vs Wolf 1 (1d20+8+1=14) / Save vs falling (1d20=19)

...the thunder buffets the wolf again as it slides the creature nearly off the edge, but not quite.

The goblin underboss is pounded by more thunder, then stands and moves out of the tempest. The underboss' ears still ring, however (failed save vs deafened)

The wolf, before it can even act, is hammered by thunder and collapses.

"Great idea," Gerren thinks to himself as he sees the sorceror try to slide the enemies off the roof. "I call upon the seven winds to bless us on this day and slay our foes!" Gerren creates winds to match even the fury of Zrith's storm. He then summons his spirit into the middle of the raging thunder, knowing that it will be safe from the storm, calling it to attack the prone bugbear.

Standard: Blessing of the Seven Winds vs Underboss blessing of the seven winds vs underboss (1d20+7+1=23, 2d10+4=13) Hits 25 vs FORT (I forgot to add for CA) for 14 damage (forgot to add my totem +1), and on a hit, I will try to slide underboss to B6 (off the edge). This creates a zone in a burst 1 centered on the target (C5) that lasts until the end of the encounter. I can move the zone 5 squares as a move action, and as a minor action I can slide each creature in the zone 1 square.

Minor: Summon Spirit Companion into B4.

If underboss saves vs falling, converting move into minor to slide him off the edge again to B6.

ACTION POINT!! Stalker's strike vs. Bugbear stalkers strike vs bugbear (1d20+7+1+2=26, 1d10+5=6) Hits 26 vs FORT for 6 damage and on a hit, spirit can flank with allies until the end of my next turn.

Gerren unleashes another howling wind atop the tower, buffeting the underboss, and...

Save vs Falling (1d20=6)

...hurling him off the tower! Flying through the air, the underboss crashes to the ground far below.

Falling Damage (4d10=21)

The shaman then summons his spirit companion, who attacks the prone bugbear. The huge goblinoid is now threatened and distracted by the spirit.

Arjhan attempts to move to engage the bugbear, but...

Pit Trap vs Arjhan (1d20+4=21) / Pit Trap Damage (1d10=3)

Seeing Arjhan drop, Ishara says, "Move no further, friends, if you can help it. There are traps abound!" Focusing her attention on the Bugbear, she says in a booming voice "You will suffer for your ACTIONS!"

Following her own advice, Ishara remains in her spot, and the Bugbear stumbles backwards at her thundering words.

Standard Action: Attack Bugbear with Thunder of Judgement.

Thunder of Judgement: (1d20+6+1=23, 2d6+4=13)

Thunder of Judgment hits Fortitude 23 against Bugbear for 13 Thunder damage, and the Bugbear is pushed to A6, and dazed, if hit.

Ishara blasts the bugbear with the disapproval of her deity, dazing him and sending him reeling towards the ledge...

Bugbear Save vs Falling / Falling Damage if applicable (1d20=4, 4d10=18 )

...and over! The bugbear can't grab hold as the thunder hurls him away into thin air.

Seeing little choice but to act now, another goblin and three more wolves show themselves from behind the throne or from within the spoiled bedding.

The goblin blackblade swings his shortsword at Gerren and strikes the deva (6 damage).

The first wolf (2) misses Moroth with its jaws, but another (3) manages to rip a large piece of the shifters leg away with its fangs! (3 crits, 8 damage)

The last wolf (4) attacks Gerren as well, and again flesh is ripped from bone as the fangs slip between armor (4 crits, 8 damage).

"So this is what it feels like to take damage," Gerren thought to himself as chunks of his leg were ripped out by the wolf. Good thing bears are bigger and stronger than wolves.

OOC: The tan zone is totally safe to move through, or start or end your turn in... at least for us. I can move it as a move action, and as a minor, I can slide each creature in it 1 square.

Korg circles around the pit until and moves up to one of the wolves.

"Here puppy, what's that over there!?"

Korg is able to confuse the wolf for a fraction of a second, but that is enough time for him to strike at the animals jugular. Unfortunately, the wolf ducks and only loses a few hairs.

OOC: Does anyone know if a sustainable zone that can be moved three spaces with a move action can be moved six spaces with double move? Also, is it okay to truncate a 3x3 zone by pushing it up against a wall, making it a 3x2 zone?
