Mal checks over everyone to make sure they are ok, and congratulates them for a job well done.

"Yes, Hedoni, I did." Mal looks at the paper.

OOC: IIWs for all! After a short rest, Mal heals himself to 24 HP and no surges and Ravenblade for 18 to full. Another short rest, Salazar heals 35 HP to full. Another short rest, Daggoth heals 48 HP to full. A final short rest, Hedoni heals 15 to 33, and he can use his own healing surge to get the rest of the way. Or he can use two without the bonus. Whatever. Oh, and I think Mal would prefer to rest here.

IIW (Mal, Ravenblade) (10+1d6+3=14, 11+1d6+3=18)

IIW (Salazar) (11+1d6+3=16, 11+1d6+3=19)

IIW (Daggoth) (16+1d6+3=24, 16+1d6+3=24)

IIW (Hedoni) (11+1d6+3=15)

Breathing in the cool fresh air, Ravenblade rests with the goup. "Thanks Commander, I needed the respite." Addressing the rest of the group, "Well, I for one would prefer beginning the trek back to Overlook. This area may not be clear of orcs and a slit throat wouldn't look good on me in the morning light. We can discuss the day's events on the way, such as what the heck is the purpose of boiling hot water in tunnels in this Nexus thing!" he finishes, looking at Kalad.

The dwarf then removes one of the black metal swords and tries to examine it. Not certain he ever saw the like before, he passes it to his companions.

1d20+1=5 (plus whatever skill bonus applies for metallurgy, although I expect it doesn't matter with such a low throw).

OOC: Wasn't that a great battle! The whole adventure was quite fun actually. Sadly, you will have to continue without me over the next two weeks and a half (no crazy, unorthodox, opinionated, tree-hugging dwarf should be a relief for a while). Amy and I are flying out to Italy this Friday for our delayed honeymoon and will be returning on Sunday, May 17th. Emily said she has a side-quest for you guys to keep you busy. If you finish it early before my return, please feel free to continue the campaign since Gary can always play Ravenblade. Having said that, I will continue posting until the evening of this Thursday if needed.

After the short rest, burns are cooled, wounds begin to mend and everyone feels refreshed.

Mal hands Hedoni the piece of paper he found. It is a note, written in the same code as the message you found on the dark one.
  •   For Hedoni only:
      Myrissa,
If you can be discreet, I have an offer for you and Tusk. I must admit the only smart thing Tusk ever did was send you to the Shadowfell for help. Be both know it wonít matter how many warriors he commands, without our help, heíll never get past Bordinís Watch.

I know Sarshan refused to help you since he prefers the safer, low-profile ventures. I am tired of his small meddling. Hobgoblins menacing villages is childís play. I hunger for greater things as you and Tusk do. I believe I can assist you, even if my commander would disagree. Sarshan will never forgive me if this plan fails, but I will take the risk and, in turn, gain the glory. My services wonít come cheap, but once Tusk lays claim to the soft lands in the Vale, Iím sure my price will seem insignificant. Remember to reveal nothing of my involvement to Sarshan and only contact me directly.

      -Modra

Kalad says to Ravenblade "Well, wasn't it obvious from the schematics? How else would the magnetic cascade unit get hot enough?" and then mumbles under his breath "What kind of dwarf doesn't understand the basic principles of hydrographic electromagnetism?"

OOC: I think that is two votes for go back to the city now and one vote for rest here. Still looking for a consensus.

I can neither confirm nor deny the fact that there may or may not be a quest experience award.

"Hydrographic electromagnetism you say? Hmmmm....I do seem to recall hearing some of the dwarfs talking about that kind of stuff back at the clan years ago. Of course, I was a little too busy rock climbing at the time, but the vantage point always allowed me to overhear some interesting things, even from dozens of feet up."

"Has anyone ever seen this kind of metal before?" he asks, pointing at the black sword which Daggoth has stuck into the ground after a cursory glance.

Hedoni reads the note to the group, waiting to see what they have to say about it. He looks around, and decides it'd be much better to rest here for the night before returning.

Daggoth is grateful for the healing from Mal, and is feeling much better as his blistered flesh is soothed and repaired.

Iranda,

Our dark creeper scouts have been quiet adept at finding the locations of the tunnel entrances, and discovering how the passages connected one side of the mountains to the other. However, they have not learned all. It seems there is an important mechanism to closing and opening the tunnels and they have not discovered its workings. You are charged with this task. Find the core locking mechanism and make sure those tunnels stay open. Once the dwarf army has been crushed and we have overtaken Overlook, meet me at the portal with the key.

"Didn't you say that Modra wrote that other letter we found, Hedoni? Whoever it is, he or she seems to be pulling different strings and coordinating a lot of stuff behind the scenes with secret letters. I have no idea what it all means though. Have we heard the name Sarshan anywhere before? Sounds elvish to me. We can talk about it more on the way back."

OOC: Can we maybe start a thread with "clues" and "letters" about the campaign.

"Sounds like that troublesome orc was important, but the witch was moreso. Kalad, why is the Nexus left open at all? Doesn't Shadowfell pretty much only have bad things in it?"

OOC: It seems like the consensus is to go back to Overlook now.

As you start the journey back to the city, Kalad explains about the Nexus. "I'm no city tactician and those tunnels have been around alot longer than I have, but I'll tell you what I know. I learned this during my initiation into the order of Sundered Chain. The Nexus tunnels, and the other tunnels at the monastery and the falls, were meant to delve into the mountains and provide quicker access between areas. Eventually the tunnels were dug clear through the other side of the mountain into Orc County. I guess they wanted a way to spy on the horde. But the tunnels have always remained a dwarven secret.

"As far as I know, there is no connection with these tunnels and the Shadowfell. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure even what the Shadowfell is. Do you know?"

And to Ravenblade "I've worked with quite a bit of different types of metal in my days. We made quite a number of beautiful pieces in the Monastery, but I've never come across a substance like that before."

OOC: Feel free to start a thread on hints if you like. It is not a bad idea. But I'm certainly not going to write anything there. You've got to figure out the clues for yourselves.

"Hmmm...never seen it you say. What about the rest of you; seen this metal before? As regards the Shadowfell, never heard of it either."

OOC: Maybe the spellcasters can use arcana to examine the metal. Regarding the thread, I meant to suggest a thread to merely collect the various clues we receive like these two letters, the key, and such. If the group wants to discuss the meaning of them there that's fine too, but I imagine these clues will pile up and be dispersed in the various threads over time.

Hedoni examines the weapon carefully, while also digging through his memory for information about the Shadowfell and those people and events mentioned in their notes.

Arcana and history checks (weapon): 1d20+13+1=31, 1d20+10+1=27

During his mid-level planar world studies, Hedoni read a book called "Pervasive Melancholy, Domains of Dread, and the Darklands: Your complete guide to the Shadowfell." He remembers that the Shadowfell is the dark echo of the mortal world, a twilight realm that exists "on the other side" of the world and its earthly denizens. Similar in form to the natural world, this land is darker, more ominous, and thrumming with strange powers. This murky land spawned creatures of its own, including dark ones, undead, shadar-kai, nightwalkers and others who worship the Ghoul King and the Raven Queen. Also, he can't remember the name of the exact substance, but the metal used to fashion the swords the orcs were carrying is a material native to the Shadowfell. Finally, Hedoni has never heard of Modra, Iranda or Sarshan.

"Well, we made it to the Monastary in good time. When we got there, there were several cooking fires, which we weren't sure what to make of. When we entered the grounds of the Monastary, we found several orcs there and were able to fight them off. Inside, we found more orcs, including some witch that had defiled the shrine of Moradin. None of the clerics or paladins were left alive in that room or the bedchambers." Mal looks down in sadness and allows the others to continue the story.

OOC: I don't want to hog this whole thing.

Ravenblade continues the tale, realizing that Mal is momentarily caught up within his memories of the past.

"Hmmmm....we then proceeded down the deep stairwell, flinging orcs into the abyss and killing a drake on the way. Once at the bottom, we immediately noticed that a raging fire had collapsed the tunnels of the monastery. An orc leader and one of their unholy Eye's of Gruumsh were beating and interrogating the lone dwarf survivor." he says, nodding towards Kalad. "With the graces of Moradin and Melora, we managed to kill all enemies, save Kalad, and retreat just in time before the entire tunnel chamber collapsed. Those passages should be inaccessible for a few months at least."

He pauses a moment, then continues, "Once outside the monastery, Kalad felt it would be best to check on the Waterfalls and Nexus to ensure those tunnels were also sealed off. We headed to the waterfalls first, being slowed down somewhat by an, ahem, unlikely attack of griffins. Shortly after that, we came upon the Freeriders. What happened next, at the Nexus, is best explained by the others."

"Immediately past the waterfall we entered into a room filled with shooting traps and robotic dog guardians. The ordeal would have gone better had the control panel not... malfunctioned..."

Daggoth continues after a short pause.

"We made it through the traps not much worse for wear. The next room proved to be a bit more of a challenge. No machines, no traps. The large room was filled with a host of orcs, as well as some fire beetles who attacked us and orcs alike. The only thing that stood out was some dark little fella. Don't recall his name at the moment"

Daggoth was unsure whether or not to reveal more details about the dark one, the notes, and the key just yet, so he continued with the more general description of events.

If that was not enough, in the next room we stumbled upon had a rather grouchy troll with a taste for adventurer flesh. The creature had defiled the alter to Moradin. With our will and Moradin's grace we slew the beast with fire."

"Others who stumbled upon the troll were not so lucky. I believe we found what was left of the Fartriders strewn across the floor. At least the bits the troll had not yet eaten."

"We were lucky enough to succeed where the Farstriders failed, and took down the troll. Kalad led us into the Nexis room - huge place - and we weren't alone. I took to working on the controls immediately while everyone else made their way up. The dwarfs and I worked for a while until we were interrupted by minions, while the rest of the group got held up by someone who looked like he was in charge."

Hedoni indicates Salazar, Mal and Daggoth as those that fought on the ledges, and continues,

"We fought hard - got lucky a few times, and unlucky a few too. Eventually Kalad and I had enough time to release the water and flood the tunnels, but our timing wasn't exactly good..."

OOC: LOL at Daggoth calling them the Fart Riders.

Megan adds "In the tunnels past Elsir Falls, we noticed there were a couple of dark ones with the orcs. Very unusual. And we found a map of the tunnels on one of them. Did you guys come across anything like that?"

OOC: Very nice recap of the adventure everyone.

"Wasn't there also some strange looking woman fighting with...what was his name in the letter, that orc leader, Tooth or Claw or something, in the Nexus chamber? Hmmm....can't remember the names, but I think Hedoni might remember them from those strange letters he found and read. You know, the ones about the Shadefall or something."

OOC: Kalad was with us throughout and heard everything about the letters too. He has no reason to keep things secret, so we probably shoudn't hold back in case in makes us look shifty.

Kalad is looking very tired and grim. From the looks of him, he didn't sleep much last night. He's been trying hard not to think too much about the slaughter at the Monastery. "Yes, um, I think Hedoni has two notes that might shead some light on the matter. And didn't we bring back some unusual swords the orcs were carrying?"

"Ahhh yes, I forgot about the swords. Here they are. Again, I think Hedoni had a look of recognition on his face when he examined the metal and might be better able to explain."

Ravenblade unwraps the two black blades he found on the orc militants and presents them for the council's perusal.

"I'm not sure of the exact composition, but the metal is native to the Shadowfell, and used to craft their weapons. Beyond that, I don't know. As for those notes, here you are. Can't say we know much about them other than Iranda being the first Dark One we slayed, and Myrissa and Tusk falling in the Nexis."
