The Town of Ravengro

The town of Ravengro was a quiet farming community in the Wilds, north of Lepidstadt. However, many decades ago, it became the front line for a minor war between the Baronies of Lepidstadt and Carlstadt, as each built a fortress within only a few miles of the town. The Lepidstadters built the Sceptre Tower in the hills to the south, and the Carlstadtian forces countered with the Shadow Tower on the plains in the north.

Today, with the war long over and the Barony of Carlstadt no longer existing, Ravengro is again a small community of grain harvesters, with a healthy dose of Lepidstadtian criminals on the run, looking to start new lives in anonymity.

The town operates outside of Lepidstadtian rule, and is overseen by the Triumvirate, made up of the Mayor (a hereditary position seen largely as a figurehead), an elected Council Chairman, and an appointed Chief Magistrate.

The Shadow Tower

The Shadow Tower is a training ground for young adventurers. These youngsters are selected at various points in their childhoods, taken to the Tower, and cultivated in whatever abilities they might already possess. Students are typically groomed from juvenile convicts, orphans, or from families who cannot afford to feed their children, but are occasionally kidnapped from their homes if they have shown particular aptitude.

The Tower is governed over by the Commandant. Little is known about the current Commandant. He is only rarely seen, and then dressed head to toe in black, addressing the students from a balcony of his own private tower and residence on the grounds of the school. He is referred to only as Commandant, and none seem to even know his name.

Trainees at the Shadow Tower receive instruction in history, diplomacy, torture, fighting techniques and battle strategy, in addition to pullout courses depending on the nature of the student's abilities. Those with a nature favoring the arcane are trained by the Head Wizard. While this is purely a title, the current Head Wizard is actually a wizened old enchantress of seemingly remarkable ability. Those with primal talents are instructed by the Warden. The current Warden is a dark-skinned shaman known for beating students slow to answer his questions with a club made from the hind leg of a jaguar. Characters favoring the martial arts are looked after by the Battle Sergeant, a one-eyed giant of a man who walks around with no fewer than ten weapons visible on his person. Those students who wish to study the divine arts do so with the Head Priest in his flowing black robes, while the Lord of the Mind's Eye instructs those with psionic and telepathic tendencies. It is said that the Lord of the Mind's Eye never speaks aloud, rather waiting for his students to learn his instructions by reading them from thought alone. Very little is known about the Night Lord, who instructs the next generation of assassin and other creatures of the dark.

Once a student's studies are completed, there is no graduation ceremony. Rather, trainees are formed into teams and sent out on secretive missions for the Tower and its rulers. Little is known how such teams get their orders, but students gossip that these teams even will kill each other to get ahead in the eyes of the Commandant. Those teams that fail even the smallest test are returned to trainee status, if not killed outright.

The Sceptre Tower

The Sceptre Tower, located in soft rolling hills to the south of Ravengro, is the private retreat of the Shadow Tower leadership, as well as housing a prison for those the Commandant deems a threat. No student is allowed to see the inside.

As with all things in the Shadow Tower of which little is known, many rumors swirl as to the exact nature of the Sceptre Tower. Some say that it is haunted. Others say it is the location of the Commandant's Arena, where those vying for positions of leadership in the Shadow Tower do battle. The current favorite among Shadow Tower students is that it is actually the refuge for the former Baron of Carlstadt, who underwent a terrible accident, deforming him and turning him into a savage immortal beast.
