Jak Comes to the Tower

In the slave quarters of the empire, you found a crew to join or you died. Every new slave was another mouth that would take a portion of the food the slavers threw into the holding area. The slavers didn't increase the amount of food when they picked up new product, they just let us fight over the oft moldy morsels. They said it produced stronger slaves; ones that would sell for a higher price. Being part of a crew helped even your odds that you'd get to eat. Being alone would help you into an early grave from starvation. If, that is, the other slaves didn't beat you to death in your sleep before starvation got the chance. A crew watched over you in the night, more from implied threat than actual vigilance. Being part of a crew meant a better shot at life, such that it was in the slave quarters.

It was a simple premise and one that Jak noticed quickly even at the ripe age of 10. Having been taken from his home in a slaver raid earlier that month, he had been transported here and flung into the holding area without ceremony. In only a couple of days, he was able to discern the strongest crew and join it easily on account of his natural strength and abilities. Jak reaped the benefits of being in the strongest crew and saw the swift decline of some of the other slaves. It was a terrible decline, peppered with plenty of begging and sobbing as they starved or were refused admittance to a crew. This cemented the importance of the crew in Jak's mind. Join a crew to survive and maybe one day, escape. As slave life went however, Jak had it fairly good; he was able to get food most days and good sleep most nights. Because of his crew.

Two years into his bondage, while working in some lords quarry one day, the slave master called Jak over to him. He told Jak that today was his lucky day; someone was interested in buying him! Jak looked up to the rim of the quarry trying to spot who had taken an interest in him. It was common practice for lords and merchants who were in the market for slaves to observe the area where they labored to see which were strong or capable. It was much more cost effective to sell the slaves into temporary service to a lord to dig out his quarry or to unload one of the massive merchant ships and let prospective buyers see the slaves at work, rather than hold a presentation day in one of the markets. Jak was taken to the quarry entrance where a group of travel-dressed people were waiting. Jak was questioned briefly by the travelers about his intelligence, health and cunning. Seemingly satisfied with his answers, the travelers set to bargaining and haggling over his price with the slavers. Once settled, the slavers handed over a key, (presumably to the shackles upon Jaks wrists and ankles) and a parchment they mentioned was proof of ownership. Jak was now no longer a slave, he was property.

The travelers rode in silence towards the nearby city, Jak walked behind them, his shackles secured by a long rope to the last riders mount. Once in the city, Jak was surprised to be presented with a mount of his own, a sturdy draft horse that didn't shy away from him when he approached. The travelers unshackled him and bade him to mount. Jak considered his chances of making his break for freedom now. Something in his manner must have tipped the travelers to his thoughts because as one, they maneuvered there steeds to block all exit paths. Their faces left no doubt that he would stand no chance if he fought for escape. More, they all had their hands casually resting on their weapon pommels, and they looked well versed in use of said weapons. Jak mounted.

Long weeks of travel brought Jak to the rural outskirts of a small town. He had warmed up to the travelers over the journey, talking with them and learning what his fate would entail. Surprisingly, he was not going to be toting stone in a quarry, or pressed into a construction guilds work-gang. They informed him that he would be trained in whatever skills he showed the most aptitude for. Trained in a Tower that specializes in bringing out the hidden talents of it's students. Jak was warned that his old life as a slave was over, and whatever life he had before that was likewise over. He wouldn't be a slave, but he would belong to the Tower all the same until he was deemed worthy to join a team of his own. The travelers all told him that life in the Tower was hard work and some of the trainees didn't make it. That sounded none too different than the slave quarters. Only this time with a twist: survive first, then join a crew. Jak decided to see what this Tower could offer him. It wasn't like he had any choice in the matter right now since escape was out of the question. This Tower churned out capable beings it seemed. After all, the group that he traveled with now were proof positive of that.

Thanks. I don't know if making an empire that holds slaves messes with your setting or not, but I can change it to fit if you need. Jak believes in the concept of the "team", so I'll get along with the party just fine. And in the event that we overthrow the Tower ;) I can rationalize that too!

Good backstory, and definitely gives a good reason for Jak to work with the other PC's as his new crew.

It reminds me of Bean's back story from Ender's Shadow (which is good, btw). I should have some sort of back story for Hammer, too, but I think he is connected with Nathan's character, if I remember right (it's been awhile, so I may not). I think it was that he was found and is the muscle to Nathan's character's brains.

Corvan Danaviss

The agile fighter in hide armor twists to break his fall and slowly rolls over on the ground, feeling a little dazed. Getting ready to rise, for the umpteenth time Corvan curses the day he chose to fight for the younger brother. The signs of civil war were there early on. For centuries only one child in the lineage ever manifested all powers in the spectrum, yet this time there were two. It didn't help that both of them also vied for the same woman, one for love and the other to spite the brother by taking what he wanted.

Things were civil at first, neither brother taking direct action, but Corvan remembers the day when the younger brother had enough of his brothers games. "Ha! That was a sight!" he thinks. Without Corvan's intervention that day only one brother would be alive now and maybe the civil war would never have happened. But just as the younger brother was about to squeeze the life out of his older siblings neck, Corvan grappled him aside. Well, instead of thanking him, the older sibling couldn't stand that he had to be rescued by a Colorblind. "Damn that Ga-...No! Must not even think their names! Anyone might be probing my mind even now."

Getting up and grabbing a stone on the ground, he smashes one knee, then throws his new weapon at another's forehead. "Why do they always have to come in threes! At least I guessed well and killed their drafter first or by now I'd be burned to a crisp or spelled some other way." Corvan remembers how the civil war was declared for want of a better description. That night, when he was going to meet his love, the older brother tricked the woman's family to set up an ambush for the younger sibling. They never knew what they were risking by attacking until they were all burning, including the servants, slaves, children and horses. He didn't leave any of them alive. He had no choice in his fury, especially since he thought he was betrayed by his beloved. Corvan had to drag him out of the burning residence before he too would have been immolated.

Stepping aside to let his foe overstep and lure him close, Corvan hamstrings the man with a quickly pulled dagger. "Just one more left." The thought reminds him of all the skirmishes and battles he fought together with the younger brother, taking his orders, doing whatever needed doing with not thoughts of morality. "How do you fight a monster without being one yourself. That was always our question and the answer was always the same." Well, in the end Corvan picked his side poorly and paid the price for the next sixteen years. Enslaved, fighting in arenas for the sport of others, living off the scraps of glory and food given by those he despised.

"NEVER AGAIN!!!" he bellows in fury, grabbing his shield, and shoves the last man hard, sending him flying over the cliff. Stepping to the precipice he looks down, using his sleeve to wipe blood from his cut lip. "I am coming for you Gavin Guile! I, Corvan Danaviss, will avenge your brother!" he shouts as loud as his lungs permit, the word "brother" echoing repeatedly in the ravine below. With grim purpose, he hopes his mind and words were scryed by the Watchers and that he can soon face another trio of fools bent on his assassination.

OOC: I've put the new monk multiclass feat Gary found, Master of the Fist, in this statblock with training in acrobatics even though it hasn't hit the online builder yet. I hope that's okay. Also, I think Jon said it would be okay to switch to a shield with the master at arms minor action, so I picked my daily power based on that. Please let me know if I misremembered. I included a "Current AC/REFLEX" line for each post since the mountain ki focus and/or shield will often add +1/+1 or +2/+1 to those values.

Good stuff guys!

I wasn't planning on a backstory, but I now feel inspired to write one. If my schedule allows, I'll try to get one up shortly.

When is the official start day?

Sorry guys. I came back with a minor upper respiratory infection, and I've been feeling incredibly exhausted after work. Hence, no progress or updates on DG. I finished the first of two guest lectures today, and I already have enough material prepped for the second lecture such that I'm free to play again :) I've got a personality figured out, and I'll get his back-story with Hammer hammered out (sorry).

I think I just need to flip a coin on the ranged vs skirmisher bard archetype. Given the mass number of melee capable characters, I'm leaning towards pure range. That might lower the potential for max THP, as a THP battery power for Bard is melee, but I think I'll overcome that with other tricks. We'll see what I decide upon tonight.

And last but certainly not least, I wanted to extend a warm welcome to Dan. I hope you have much fun in the game. Also, your Minotaur, while perhaps a bit too wise for my character's taste, would make for some outstanding additional muscle in his most helpful circle of associates who help others and make certain no harm befalls them ;) In short, Hammer can only hammer 3 or 4 folks into submission at once.

Thank you for the welcome! I'll be healing some up at the front lines too, so you don't have to be as big a THP battery. Flying enemies will make for a tough battle, my minotaur will make a terrible shooter (-1 Dex mod)

Heavy thrown weapons are a Str-based melee class' friend when forced to ranged combat. You can hurl a javalin, throwing hammer, or hand axe and use your Str-mod for attack and damage.

And Corvan has a high dex so his ranged attacks are decent with dex weapons and heavy thrown weapons. He can, however, only use a ranged basic attack for such attacks, so a ranged power focusing bard might be cool. Plus, we haven't had a ranged bard on deadgoblins yet and there are some mega-powers to choose from (e.g. Victim of the Feywild, Arrow of Warning, Arrow of Ill Omen). I think lots of the bard ranged powers are implement powers with some ranged weapon powers, so some type of songbow might be good.

We also have our telekinetic psion to fling enemies around at range. Overall, we see to be covered very well on all levels.

And my hexblade can do ranged or melee equally well and is very mobile.

All in all, this should be a well-rounded, tough, pain-enducing party.

If by that you mean, getting something likely a rebounding throwing hammer +1, then yes. All magical ranged weapons return to you automatically. We've never stipulated it's at the start of your next turn though and have played as instantly returning after that attack is resolved.

How we play it (which I am pretty sure is the correct reading of the rules) means you're still armed between turns, which can be very important for OA's or granted attacks.

Ok. I'll pick up a Throwing ax and give it an enchantment so it won't be a fire-and-forget deal. Mundane items are cheap, but a cheap enchantment will help me hit, and do more than the base damage.

My original character idea was a tiefling using the bard THP granting powers, coupled with a tiefling feat and a flaming weapon, to pretty much have everyone with either THP or the means of obtaining THP on their turn. Sadly, I think there was a nerf that made that harder to pull off, plus the cunning bard build isn't that well suited for such a build.

Valorous bards grant THP as a class feature, plus there is a great melee at-will power that lets folks get THP when they hit an enemy I've hit. It's con based, so it will only be good for about 2 THP as a cunning bard.

The feat (stirring song of baator?) requires a fear or fire bard attack, which seems easy enough to get with a flaming weapon, but then if I'm using implement powers.... The simple work-around is to go swordmage and use a flaming longsword as my implement. But that (of course) had its own drawbacks. No wand beatdowns (accurate wand anyone?) and then I can't use the ranged weapon powers. So then I think about a flaming dagger, and it looks tempting, but it gimps my damage output (which I don't really care about when you get down to it).

So, I'm tempted to drop the THP idea (for a few levels) if Jon would let me potentially retrain/rebuild valorous if I hate or cannot get the cunning feature to work in a PBP game. With all of our badass melee characters running around, I'm thinking that I NEED to start dishing out free attacks. Bards aren't the best for that, but I'm married to the bard of all trades character idea, so it'll be Staggering Note getting used a ton. It's a will attack which does cha mod damage and a push 2. Then an ally gets to make an attack either before, during, or after the push. Free fighter marks. Free set-ups for Hammer to charge. Set-ups to get the BG away from our psion.

Staggering Note is a must have power for a ranged bard. VS will, some damage, rearrangement or pushing into hazardous terrain, free action attack for an ally, plus bonus riders based on the attacker. If everyone delineates their MBA rolls for you, you'll be making all those rolls like we do in other games. Then you can have many tactical choices like: mark with the fighter or mark with the paladin or push into flanking or push off the cliff....
