Daggoth laughs at Torrance

"You have some balls. Frame me for a theft to shift focus from your strange perversions. To even bring this up now that we've caught you in the middle of a Vecna cult gathering is laughable. A doomed man grasping at straws.
Bring charges against me? I'm sure we can find some dwarven ladies with some interesting stories to tell as well. Heh, I wonder what courts will even take the word of a follower of Vecna.
Hmmm.
Maybe I should just kill you outright, just to be sure. You can't press false charges if you are dead."

Looking at Murrak

"Yes Murrak, he threatens to arrest me for a crime I did not commit. A threat he used to keep silent about his deviant behavior. I can give you details if you wish. I don't think he realizes how far I have come since those days when I was just a lowly guard. I won't be cowered by his false threats now. Ask the liberators here if I am a common thief."

Daggoth stands over Torrance, axe in hand, contemplating his next action.

Mal says nothing, but walks up behind Daggoth, arms crossed, glaring at Lord Torrence. He can see that this is personal, but feels it necessary to display his support for the man he has fought with the longest.

A little concerned that Daggoth will do something he cannot live with, let alone face Jalissa knowing he did it, Ravenblade steps close. "Daggoth, you are definitely not a common thief, and you are also not a common murderer. The easily trodden path through the woods is rarely the most beautiful, and neither is a blade tempered by forging in cold flames. Do not let this filthy excuse of a man ruin what you become."

Sir Murrak looks at Daggoth. Normally, he would believe Lord Torrence over anyone, but recent circumstances have changed his view slightly. "Daggoth, I have fought beside you. You have provided my city with a brave and strong warrior who has sought to do the right thing, as all the Liberators have. I would like to hear your tale, but Lord Torrence is a prisoner in my custody, and it is also my duty to see that no harm befalls him before he can be tried. After that, well, it is up to the citizenry." He recalls the peasants throwing rocks at the group shortly after he met the Liberators, and thinks that the Lord would do better than to trust those same citizens with his life.

Making up your minds to see Torrance tried by his peers and ignore the nobleman's threats, you return to the city.

Sir Murrak brings his prisonner to General Alvro Taramin commander of the Guards of the March. The Guards of the March are a force of 100 soldiers that usually have little to do other than patrol the safer sections in and around the city. Most merchants, guilds, and noble families have their own mercenary guards that protect their property and work together when danger appears. Murrak knows that in a time of crisis, General Taramin has the authority to call on any noble house with its own private guard to cede command of their troops directly to him.

Taramin is quite taken aback at the sight of Lord Divian Torrance, the ruler of Sayre, bound and slung onto the back of a pegasus. After serveral minutes of bluster, confusion and explanations, it is agreed that Torrance will be put under arrest for conspiracy and crimes against the state. Daggoth will also be arrested for theft. However, both parties will be under house arrest. General Taramin will assign a duty of his guards to keep Torrance at his residence until the day of this trial. Daggoth will be released into Sir Murrak's custody, but he must remain in the city until he is tried and either found guilty or innocent.

OOC: If you want to try to bolster Daggoth's defense or gather evidence against Torrance, I welcome your strategies. If you just want to shop and spend your mountains of gold, that's fine too.

Once the Liberators and Sir Murrak are free to speak alone again, Ravenblade addresses his friend. "Daggoth, you and the others were there for me when I was being framed for murder. Now I will be able to repay the debt. Tell us exactly what that filth Torrence is accusing you of. Also, you mentioned some deviant behavior of his with dwarves. If you have any details about that, specifically names or descriptions of dwarf victims, then I can go about finding witnesses in the dwarven district."

OOC: I can't remember the name of the dwarven district in Sayre, but remember something about a maze-like warren. Maybe it's the wrong city. There is no map with legend in the "background info and maps" thread to draw on. In any case the idea is to search for witnesses to help Daggoth. I'll need someone with streetwise to come along though. Aside from that I may buy a small item, but that can wait until after the RP stuff.

"I can help talk to anyone we need to convince to come forward and testify," Salazar says.

OOC: Salazar isn't trained in Streetwise, but is +13 anyways, and is +21 in Diplomacy and Bluff and +13 in Intimidate. He's probably the best bet for general social investigation.

I might do some shopping, but can do my research while we investigate the charges.

"Hmmmm.....sounds good Salazar. I'm not an expert on filthy cults like the one Torrence is part of, but I imagine there may be more Vecna followers than the five people we fought in the clearing. Maybe some of the rest of you can track down some leads about this cult. We might need witnesses to prove that Torrence was involved with Vecna or he'll just deny everything. Some evidence in his possession would also help."

OOC: Suggesting two more leads to follow: 1) find other Vecna cult followers as witness against Torrence, 2) search Torrence's home/workplace for evidence he's a Vecna follower. If we don't find anything, it might end up being his word against ours. Also, with more than one lead, it would give everyone a chance to do something. EDIT: Also, we need to hear Marek tell Daggoth's side of the theft story.

"I still have a hard time believing that Lord Torrence would be a follower of Vecna. I can investigate his home and office for any information."

OOC: Given Daggoth being released into Murrak's custody, he should probably go with me.

With a sigh, Daggoth gives a quick recounting of his experiences with Torrence.

"I used to know some of the kitchen staff pretty well when I worked there. Turns out that he had taken a liking to a dwarf woman who raised geese. She was summoned over to the house way to often for him to be asking questions about her geese. She looked none to happy when she came over. After a few weeks she disapeared. No idea what happened to her.
Henry in the kitchen found a new girl to supply some exotic birds, and Torrance demanded to "interview" her and to bring one of her brids.
I saw her leaving later that night, and she looked a wreck. You could tell by her face how traumatized she was. I tried to comfort her, see if I could help. Someone must have seen this since the very next day I was out on my ass with these false accusations of theft.
To this day I dont know what happened to that poor girl."

Salazar and Ravenblade head to the streets to scope out what they can on the Vecna cultists.

Sir Murrak and Daggoth decide to nose around to dig up what dirt they can on Torrance and perhaps even clear Daggoth's name in the process.

OOC: At this point, you're going to have to roll something. Also, you can talk to specific NPCs you've met in Sayre.

As they head to the Low Mountain, Salazar tells Ravenblade, "I'm not too concerned with tying Torrence to the cult. His Vecnite friends all had holy symbols and the like on them when we captured him. I'm more interested in seeing what the dwarf community knows about his dirty little secret. If he's making a dwarf woman cry, it must be bad, and people around here might know something."

Choosing the third pub on the left, just because it seems lucky, Salazar leads Ravenblade into the Thunderkeg Inn, and after a few drinks starts mentioning rumors of Torrence's arrest, looking for any dwarves who seem especially interested.

Sir Murrak and Daggoth decide to begin with Lord Torrence's official office in Sayre. Entering, the cavalier speaks to the Lord's aide. "It is of the utmost importance that I and my companion be allowed to have unfettered access to the offices. After all, we might find something to clear our Lord, or at least to clear those who aid him in his duties." He says it nicely, rather than following through on the implication that the aide may be also up for trial at some point. diplomacy (1d20+20+1=34)

OOC: I will be out of the loop until Friday, probably, so Mal will just follow Hedoni, but I figured I could make a suggestion.

The dwarf and human enter Thunderkeg Inn and are soon reminded of all the admirable qualities that traditional dwarven brew embodies. Salazar uses the right blend of curiosity and disinterest to get the locals talking. He hears that Torrance is quite the connoisseur of dwarven ladies. One man even claims that his niece, Leena, was quite a favorite of the lord a couple years ago. He reportedly took advantage of her and when things went bad, Torrance paid Leena off and told her to see his personal herbalist for treatment.

Ravenblade savors the well crafted beverage, and drinks in the sounds and smells of dwarfs at leisure. He can tell than most of the tavern patrons aren't really interested in gossip and could care less about Torrance. They come to the Thunderkeg Inn to drink and relax. However one or two patrons seem to be nodding and paying attention. The man Salazar talks to the most, seems to be sincere and happy to have the opportunity to complain about his niece's mistreatment.

Murrak convinces Lord Torrance's chamberlain to give him access to the lord's office.

Daggoth heads to his favorite place in the manor, the kitchen, to catch up with Henry, Torrance's cook. Henry is delighted and surprised to see his old friend and welcomes him to a seat by the hearth where a large cauldron of savory stew bubbles softly.

OOC: Time to roll a skill again.

Salazar nods to the man with the unlucky niece. "Would it be possible for you to introduce us to your niece, Master Dwarf? We might be able to stop Torrance and his deviancy once and for all, but we'll need people willing to step forward and accuse him."

OOC: To sum up you have two minor quests - 1) gather evidence/witnesses that will condemn Lord Torrance. 2) gather evidence/witnesses that will exonerate Daggoth.

Daggoth and Murrak are going to Lord Torrance's residence while Salazar and Ravenblade are getting the word on the street. If Hedoni and Mal want to help, feel free, but this is very open ended so you'll have to tell me what you want to do.

Murrak searches Lord Torrance's office and finds some damning documents. First, there is a ledger showing various tax revenue, fees, and other state income. There is another ledger showing payments for government services, city workers' pay, and other expenses. However, there are occasional discrepancies in the expense ledger that suggest Torrance has been using state funds to pay for his private dabblings.
There are entries with various females names and occasionally a disturbing symbol.User posted image

Also, there seems to be string of correspondence with officials in Nefelus, the island nation not far off the coast. The mage council that governs Nefelus have sent multiple letters asking Torrance for assistance. It seems there usually tropical climate has been getting steadily colder and colder. The last letter is a desperate plea for help and states that a iceberg ring has formed around the island, blocking off any traffic or communication. The letters suggest that if the growing climate change isn't stopped, it may soon invade Sayre and Elsir Vale as well.
