    • Illumination: Dim light from the vortex. Otherwise darkness except where you illuminate. I'm assuming someone is using a sunrod, so 20 squares radius light from the party.
      Ceiling:100+ feet high, unable to see the top.
      Bridges: These well-built bridges of stone cross the shadow water 10 feet above the water. A character knocked off the bridge falls into the water. A DC 20 Athletics check to climb up onto from out of the shadow water.
      Squares with triangles: Difficult terrain.

Seeing that they will soon be overtaken by the vortez, Edeya shouts to the mages "Can you do anything to stop it? If not flee for your lives." She summons a swarm to confuse the dragon and rider, push them back and slow them down. She also directs the minotaurs to keep at the shadow binders.

Move: none
Standard: swarming bats hits Ref 18 on dragon and Ref 29 on Paldemar for 10 damage swarming bats on dragon; paldemar (1d20+12+1=18, 1d20+12+1=29, 1d12+7=10) creates a burst 2 zone of difficult terrain that also affects flying creatures. Enemies grant combat advantage in zone. Slide both targets back towards vortex.

Edeya calls out to the mages and those who hear her pause to look at the vortex and developing tidal wave. They nod in understanding. The githzerai seeker helps to cover her allies' retreat by summoning a swarm of bats that impede even the shade dragon. Using her mental bond, she directs the minotaur statues to attack and the shade binder and dragon are both hit.

Paldemar curses in the water and also turns to look at the tidal wave now looming above him. He commands the dragon, with Demuriath still on top, to fly down and its all the traitor can do to climb back on top for now. Demuriath hangs on tightly to a dragon spine lest he fall off and, still spelled, is unable to see Paldemar climb back on the dragon although perhaps his other sense tell him more.

OOC: Demuriath wasn't targeted by the swarming bats but he was on top of the dragon so I moved him with the creature. The alternative would have been for him to fall off the dragon and into the water. I don't know the rules for forced movement of ridden creatures and how that affects the rider.

OOC: Does Demuraith feel he garnered disapproval from his queen by his willingness to feed Paldemar to the vortex, or simply for his willingness to die to take him down? Or another reason entirely? Insight 1d20+9+1=23

For the briefest of moments Demuriath frowns with uncertainty. When he attacked Paldemar before he was helped not by his Queen, but instead by whatever lies beyond the vortex. Could that mean he wasn't doing his Queen's bidding? Isn't killing and sending souls to her halls the same as doing her bidding? He shrugs off the doubts and focuses on the moment once more, secure in the thought that killing can't be against his deity's wishes for that would mean he was doing to wrong thing for a long, long time. Even so, he can't completely convince himself that killing Paldemar would send a new soul her way, but rather....elsewhere.

If killing Paldemar would bode ill in his Queen's eyes, then capturing him would be the next objective. Not really his strong suit, something more aligned with his sister's methods. Demuraith notices the puddles seemingly crawling up the dragons back and assumes they are a wet Paldemar. Demuraith liked that Paldemar had to scramble like a bug, perhaps he should be made to do more of that... Demuraith darts behind a shadowy wing and steps out of the minotaur constructs shadow, back on the bridge. Knowing only roughly where his prey is, Demuraith coils ropes of shadow and sends them speeding towards Paldemar, but it doesn't hit it's mark. Unable to ensnare his foe, he instead shakes off the sluggishness of his legs and the dweomer Paldemar has been hiding himself with.

Move: Shadow Step to AD8.

Standard: Executioner's Noose vs Paldemar 1d20+9+1-5; 1d6+4
Hits Fort 12 for 10 force damage. Saves:Save vs weakened, Slow and Paldemar's invisibility.
Weakened 1d20+1=8
Slow 1d20+1=15
Paldemar 1d20+1=10


OOC: I don't know if you still want to give Demuraith the ability to "see" Paldemar's evil within the shroud or not. Or, whether his spell trumps that special allowance. In any case, all the math was figured as if Paldemar had total concealment.

Blinded and in darkness, Demuriath looks for other clues about Paldemar's presence before retreating back to the walkways. His subsequent attack hits only air.

OOC: Even if Demuriath were to still be aided within the darkness he was also blinded to Paldemar, and even then the attack would have missed at FORT 17.

"Anna, hold on to me as tight as you can. We are going to get through this soon!" As Corydimbiddle walks, he pulls out another of those arcane devices and throws it at the vortex, "It seemed to work a bit last time," he whispers to himself. The gnome continues along the stone trying to get back where he came from, feeling his way through the darkness.

Hadad calls out to his old friend, doing what he can to help their retreat. Tarlesin, the red mage, realizes that Light's Shadow has adjusted tactics for a retreat and coordinates his fellow mages.

"Saldor, Belizeth, Rohezal! Take the children and translocate now!!! We'll take care of Paldemar!" commands Tarlesin as he strides out of the shadowy zone. Pointing at the nearest shadow binder he yells, "Plumbumbarum!" and the creature stiffens as a flash of fire dazes it. "Racalla, get in the water and come help me with Paldemar. Hela, you too!." At his words, the blue mage who was recently accosted by the now dazed shadow binder jumps into the water, cowl falling back revealing a female half-elf,....and walks on the surface. The half-elven female mage Racallam as Tarlesin called her, turns and intones "Aquasphaero." A ball of water flies at Paldemar and the dragon, missing both.

The three furthest mages follow Tarlesin's orders and each grabs a child, nods curtly, then vanish. The only other remaining mage, the yellow mage named Hela, hurls a minotaur statue into the water and rushes closer to where Light's Shadow are slowly retreating. As she comes closer Edeya can see that Hela is a female tiefling. The remaining minotaur statues and shadow binders clonk and glide their way closer to the fleeing party.

Demuraith moves along the bridge until he is out of the darkness and can see Paldemar clearly, but he is too preoccupied wondering if he will inflict enough harm in his weakened state to aim properly and his shadowy noose misses it's mark. Demuraith weaves a pair of shadowy shrouds around Paldemar in the hopes that he can use them soon.

Move: Walk to AG 12.

Standard: Executioner's Noose vs Paldemar
Hits Fort of 14 for 9 damage.

Free: 2 shrouds on Paldemar.

Edeya and the minotaurs strike in unison. Her arrow flies past Paldemar into the tidal wave, which may have been the distraction the minotaur statue needed to strike a blow against the traitorous mage. The other minotaur swings wide as Demuriath emerges from the dark zone. In his weakened condition he is unable to ensare Paldemar, but does garner the mage's attention.

Paldemar flies out of Edeya's swarm zone, spittle flying as he shouts. "You are too late! I have siphoned off enough energy for my next steps and soon this vortex will shatter your bodies. Your souls will be released and no longer in your control. You can try fleeing the inevitable, but not all of you will leave this day!" He points a hand towards Demuriath and purplish-black lightning forks toward the assassin. It wracks his body for 14 damage, leaving him dazed on the brink of death (dying, dazed, bloodied). As Demuriath struggles to remain standing, lightning forks from him towards the red mage Tarlesin and the blue mage Racalla. Both of them are able to twist aside in time.

OOC: The shade dragon is now 10 feet above the walkways. Daniel, the dragon and paldemar should have gone before Demuriath, but I'm leaving things as is for this round.

Despite his vocal lack of confidence Corydimbiddle manages to find a fluke timestoppinator device in his backpack. Tossing it towards the tidal wave and vortex, he is momentarily surprised to see a huge bubble form. Outside the bubble everything and everyone seems as they were, but inside the bubble where the vortex and most of the tidal wave is forming, time has momentarily slowwed. Relieved, Corydimbiddle rushes even further away with Anna in his arms.

  •  Features of the Area
    • Illumination: Dim light from the vortex. Otherwise darkness except where you illuminate. I'm assuming someone is using a sunrod, so 20 squares radius light from the party.
      Ceiling:100+ feet high, unable to see the top.
      Bridges: These well-built bridges of stone cross the shadow water 10 feet above the water. A character knocked off the bridge falls into the water. A DC 20 Athletics check to climb up onto from out of the shadow water.
      Squares with triangles: Difficult terrain.
