Demuriath boldly strikes at Paldemar, but despite the taint of the shadow vortex the assassin is unable to ensnare the traitorous mage.

      Ceiling:100+ feet high, unable to see the top.
      Bridges: These well-built bridges of stone cross the shadow water 10 feet above the water. A character knocked off the bridge falls into the water. A DC 20 Athletics check to climb up onto from out of the shadow water.
      Squares with triangles: Difficult terrain.

"Anna! Get away from her!" Corydimbiddle continues further and drops a concussive grenade at he feet aimed at the shadow, forcing it toward the abyss. The gnome then grabs the girl and starts pulling her back.

With thunderous intent, Corydimbiddle uses his concussive grenade to fling the shadow binder away while he grabs Anna. The loudness of his grenade's blast is augmented by the boom and crackling of the second energy stream lashing about wildly, no uncontrolled. It appears that pushing the shadow binder was enough to disrupt it's hold on the mage of Saruun, who drops to the ground stunned for now. The shadow binder hovers in the air, recovering. It's also clear that the dark taint within the cavern is once more lessened by the reduced energy flows.

OOC: Anna is grabbed by Cory. Given that she's a child, starved at that, you can move normally while bringing her along. The shadow vortex taint has weakened and is now at +1/+3.

Hadad shakes his head unable to clear it and decides to lift his staff and manages to use a cold wind to push the shadow away from the mage.

Standard action - Freezing Burst on A?18, hitting only Blue Shadow (+11 vs. Reflex, 1d6+10 damage).

Freezing Burst (+11 I, +1 24hr) (1d20+12=29, 1d6+10=15)

Save vs. Weakened (1d20+1=12)

OOC: Freezing Burst to hit Blue Shadow, hits Reflex 29 for 7 or 15 cold damage (not sure if Hadad was reweakened...he had saved last time). Slide Blue Shadow down and left 1 (A?18), where the burst had been centered and away from the mage. If needed, save vs. weakened success.

Hadad realizes that a decisive move must be made or Paldemar and the shade dragon will kill everyone before the ritual can be stopped. He turns his attention towards the nearest shadow binder still clutching a mage and summons elemental frost. The blast buffets the shadow binder away and for the third time an energy leash whips around and recoils, leaving the mage stunned on the ground.

A tremor builds from deep underground and the shadow vortex slows its rotation despite energy streams fueling it yet from three other mages. The shadow binders shriek in frustration as they try to augment the energy streams and keep the vortex spinning, but to no avail. It eventually slows to a complete halt and the huge cavern is momentarily silent. Even the minotaurs stop their chant and everyone watches, tense. Then the vortex begins spinning again...in the opposite direction. The motion yanks the shadow binders free of the remaining mages, the energy flows dissipating less violently than the others.

As the vortex accelerates its rotation, the dazed mages begin retaliating. The purple mage conjures a shadowy hand that grabs a binder. The orange mage sears a former captor with a lance of radiance. The red mage, Tarlesin, shouts "ignisphaero!" and a head-sized fireball shoots past Corydimbiddle to envelope the shadow binder there. The blue and yellow mages recover from being stunned, while the green mage pounds envelops a shadow binder with a wall of stone. Some of the shadow binders try to fight back, but are clearly disoriented by the sudden changes within the vortex. Corydimbiddle's Toastinator tries to take advantage as the nearby shadow binder comes close again to attack the mage on the ground.

During all of it the vortex continues spinning counter-clockwise, churning up the waters, waves now beginning to lap on to the walkways. Yet despite the ritual seemingly ending, Azad can hear Paldemar laughing maniacally from within the shadow zone.

OOC: No more bonus from the shadow vortex. I can't recall if Hadad should have still been weakened or not, so I'm ruling he's not. Flameheart defender gets an OA vs blue shadow binder. Josh can roll that, although Gary can go ahead with Azad's turn meanwhile.

Coryidimbiddle's contraption further damages the shadow binder, as does Edeya's arrow and her controlled minotaur. Her words act to solidify another minotaur statue's allegiance, although for a moment it isn't certain if it would rather follow Azad's commands instead of Edeya's. Edeya feels the presence of a third mind mingling with hers and the other minotaur.

OOC: I think Azad and Edeya both had two skill challenge successes each on red mino A, so I went with who did the last one. If Emily wants to relinquish control, just have Edeya do/say something suitable. Shade dragon and Paldemar will kill al-...uhmm, take their turn later.

The shade dragon comes neared the ground and clamps it's teeth around Demuriath, while also raking him with some tail spikes for 16 damage and weakening all his muscles (weakened save ends). In the darkness, the assassin has no warning before Paldemar spear him with a necrotic lancer spell for 14 damage (9 after resistance) that slows all his joints (slowed save ends). "Fools! The ritual was already begun a few short hours before your arrival and irreversible by the time you came. The energies poured into the rift demand release and what can't exit on the other side will be pushed back into our plane, forcefully. In moments, all of you will die and be reborn and I will ensure you don't escape. You may have surprised my apprentice Kalarel in Winterhaven, but I've known you were coming for some time now."

Hadad and Corydimbiddle immediately understand what Paldemar means. The vortex was meant to create a stable conduit between the cavern and the other side, allowing whatever was waiting beyond to enter this plane. Corydimbiddle especially appreciates the nature of the energies within the vortex, like an elastic spindle rope all wound up that stopped briefly and unwind all its tension. Unlike a spindle rope however, the arcane energies within the vortex will likely destroy everyone and everything that isn't far away. As if responding to the artificer's thoughts, the vortex continues accelerating its now counter-clockwise spin and some of the minotaur statues within the waters are beginning to slide as if pushed by an inexorable force. Seeing this, Paldemar touches the necklace around his neck, which pulses more brightly for a moment, and the hundreds of statues in the water begin moving away. The statues on the walkways however remain in place.

Demuriath, not caring about his own impending demise, vanishes only to reappear on top of the shadowy dragon. His only care is that this being who dared attack him die before he finishes off the assassin. Demuriath's sword swings down at Paldemar, threatening to push the figure into the abyss. (If this works and he falls, Demuriath also whispers to him in a voice raspy and sounding of dust, "die".)

Although still within the zone of darkness, Demuriath can suddenly "see" the evil presence that is the shade dragon and Paldemar on top. He feels that the entity of what lies beyond the vortex is aiding him, as if approving of his murderous intent. It is not the Raven Queen that is aiding him though. Paldemar frowns as Demuriath vanishes for an instant and reappears beside him. "But why...." exclaims Paldemar in confusion as Demuriath's fullblade swings accurately towards him. A split second later....

vs WILL (1d20+16=19) ....Paldemar disappears and it is just enough a distraction for Demuriath's blade to swish through air instead of flesh. Demuriath casts his gaze around malevolently, but is unable to see the traitorous mage.

OOC: Heh, heh, I liked your move, and it almost worked. Paldemar is invisible to Demuriath, save ends. Given this maneuver, I've now added Paldemar as an enemy token on the map.

Not caught up in battle with any shadow binders or minotaurs, Corydimbiddle is able to see the situation for what it is. The shadow vortex is rapidly destabilizing, spinning its pent up energy outward and thus disrupting the waters. As he watches, a tidal wave begins to form, pulling in water and sucking some of the previously chanting minotaurs back towards the center. He quickly rushes past an unfriendly minotaur, Anna in tow, and tosses an arcanic suppressinator of his creation into the vortex. It flashes brilliant as it enters the maelstrom, slowing its rotation and the formation of the tidal wave just a little. Shouts between the mages of Saruun suggest that they noticed what Corydimbiddle has done and are now aware of the growing threat.

OOC: Nice thinking Josh. I've added the slowing of the vortex as an optional challenge below. The blue area on the map is the growing tidal wave. It has not reached the walkways yet.

    • Illumination: Dim light from the vortex. Otherwise darkness except where you illuminate. I'm assuming someone is using a sunrod, so 20 squares radius light from the party.
      Ceiling:100+ feet high, unable to see the top.
      Bridges: These well-built bridges of stone cross the shadow water 10 feet above the water. A character knocked off the bridge falls into the water. A DC 20 Athletics check to climb up onto from out of the shadow water.
      Squares with triangles: Difficult terrain.

"That gnome is right, for once. We need to leave before this thing blows." Hadad raises his staff, creating a cold cloud in space, trying to pull the rider from the dragon with the whipping winds. "We may just be able to slow it enough." He lifts his staff again, and the spinning slows further. "That should help. Azad, get your people out of here!"

Hadad concurs with Corydimbiddle, shouting out commands to the rest. Recalling the general vicinity of the shade dragon and Paldemar, he conjures a burst of slippery ice amongst them within the darkened zone. Both are wrenched in opposite directions. Paldemar flails his arms, just managing to get four fingertips on a dragon spine before it is slid away from him. He falls with a surprised yelp and hits the dark, churning waters. Following the gnome's idea, Hadad hurls some elemental energies into the spinning vortex, further slowing it down.

The mages of Saruun continue fighting the shadow binders. The yellow mage flings one binder far away, but is accosted by its minotaur statue guards who have been activated the assault. The other mages fight similarly for their lives and Corydimbiddle's Toastinator can again react against the blue shadow binder. The red mage, Tarlesin, enters the area of darkeness but does not emerge on the other side. Some flames burst out of the darkness and a mechanical explosion signals the destruction of the minotaur statue within.

Save vs falling. (1d20=7)

OOC: I thought you might like to see the save vs falling throw. ;) Josh, the flameheart defender again gets an OA vs blue shadow binder. Please roll whenever you get a chance and meanwhile Gary and the others can continue with their turns.
