Hadad moves towards Corydimbiddle's bridge, then hurls a bolt of lighting at the shadow creature near Anna, but instead the spell flight harmlessly into the air. He then turns his attention to the spells controlling the nearest minotaur, but is unable to make much sense of them.

A fit of spasms overcomes Hadad and he is unable to aim or focus his mind effectively.

The red minotaur statue doesn't feel the 3 damage from the fruitjuicinator and raises the greataxe overhead to bring it crashing down through Azad's left shoulder for 17 damage. The red shadow binder inhales deeply, as if drinking, and Demuriath feels his flesh shrivel as more of his soul is sucked and into dark creature. The shadow binder becomes insubstantial again is it regains a measure of health (15 necrotic damage to Dem, 10 after resistance, red shadow binder regains 10 hp and is not bloodied and again insubstantial).

"Away with you, fiend of darkness!" shouts the dazed mage of Saruun from the floor. He splays his fingers at the shadow binder trapping Demuriath and a molten stream of lava shoots forth, over, and beyond the intended target. "Blast!" curses the mage as he shakes his head clear.

The nearest other mage still trapped by the blue shadow binder screams in agony, slumping and very close to death. The small child next to the mage begins crying, knowing he will die soon, death mere moments away. Edeya whips her head around at the sound and Hadad who is also closest, turns to look as well. The boy has dark blond hair, looks to be about five years old, his shins scraped and bleeding. As he sits there crying, they can see him clutch a toy in his arms. It looks to be some sort of plush animal, perhaps a bear or wolf.

Meanwhile, further away Anna struggles to summon her courage. Except for the red minotaur statue, all the other guard statues remain inactive and the hundreds of other bronze statues in the waters continue their eerie chanting.

OOC: Thank you for playing Hadad, Gary. The shadow binder didn't actually target Dem for an attack, but dealt automatic damage while having him trapped. I don't think this would trigger the paladin's DivC, but tell me if I'm wrong and I'll change things.

Azad moves over to flank the shadow being with Demuriath, then drives her blade straight through the creature, where it's heart would be if it had one, a flash of light accompanying her blow.

Hits AC 35 - CRIT! - for 15 damage and 3 fire and radiant damage, and on a hit Red Shadow takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls and AC until the end of my next turn.

I thought Red Shadow had been bloodied and was no longer insubstantial, but I don't see that in the status list. Add +1 to hit if he's bloodied, due to Bloodhunt.

With righteous fervor, Azad strikes a radiant blow to the shadow binder for 23 total damage. The light of her blade again reveals the dark creature's solid form.

OOC: Red shadow binder became unbloodied (and thereby insubstantial again) after draining life from Demuriath. I apologize if I didn't describe that clearly. Having explained that, Azad's attack has again blooided/negated insubstantial.

Edeya tries again to gain control of the minotaur statue "Bronze Singer, hear me. I know your ancient soul must be in tumult. Your will has been usurped. Turn from the grasp of the traitor and help us!." Then she fires another shot at the shadow binder. Disappointed with where her arrow lands she quickly notches another at the damaged statue.

OOC: If Azad's skill check succeeds in controlling Blue statue, I'll do my skill check on the next closest minotaur statue.

Azad beseeches what honor the spirit within the minotaur statue may have had, her words having no immediate effect other than to cause the statue to look between the young nearby boy and the spirit binder....head turning slowly back and forth between the two (challenge success, 3 total).

Maybe it's Edeya's words, maybe it's the emotions she conveyed, or maybe something entirely else within her, but her attempts at communicating with the spirit within the bronze minotaur statue reach fruition. The statue reacts by standing up straight to face her, greataxe held in honor guard, and salutes the githzerai seeker. Edeya feels a presence within her mind...foreign....ancient....tormented....searching; and realizes she now shares a mental bond with the construct. Feeling slightly disoriented by the experience, one thought comes through clearly...."command me." (challenge success, 4 total, blue minotaur B is now under Edeya's limited control).

Setting the sensations aside for the moment, Edeya focuses her attack and is able to hit the damage other minotaur statue with her second arrow.

OOC: Emily, you now have control of blue minotaur statue B which I've color-coded with Edeya's font and placed after her in the initiative list. It's still your turn to act with the statue. Only basic attacks are allowed (i.e. MBA, charge, bull rush) and I've put stats for attacking and moving below.

Edeya takes a moment to sort out this new sensation in her mind. Then she commands the bronze statue to move forward and strike the shadowy figure.

At her thought, the bronze minotaur statue clanks closer to the shadow binder and swings the greataxe past Corydimbiddle's toastinator. The attack misses, but the shade dragon reacts with a shriek that echoes around the cavern. It dives lower and spits out a globe of black ichor that bursts open to envelop most of the party (purple zone of darkness). What follows is a wave of deathly fumes that overcome all within the dark zone except Demuriath and the shadow binder, perhaps due to their affinity for death. Azad in particular is unable to summon the fortitude to maintain her strength (crit on her). Corydimbiddle promptly vanishes just as his fruitjuicinator explodes, the impact hurting the gnome's reserves (lose one more surge for death of a summoned creature).

OOC: Blast attack for 15 necrotic damage vs FORT (19 on Azad for crit, half on Demuriath which ends up as 2 after his resistance, half on shadow binder which ends up as 0 after resistance, 14 on Cory thanks to his construct, 10 to Hadad after thp). All hit targets, including enemies, lose a healing surge and are weakened save ends. Missed enemies take half damage, are not weakened, and don't lose a surge.

Corydimbiddle sees an opportunity to get closer to Anna, but first tosses a salve at the paladin, hoping to keep her standing. He quickly jogs the rest of the way along the bridge and keeps going, past the first construct, knowing it can't see him. Once he has walked as far as he can, he points his controlinator at the nearest yellow minotaur to minimal effect as he reappears.

The shadow binder hisses as Demuriath latches onto his soul and wrenches it back. In the darkness and confusion Corydimbiddle seizes the opportunity to rush towards Anna, but not before aiding Azad as best as he can. The gnome's controllinator fizzles and pops ineffectually and the minotaur statue's eyes narrow (skill challenge failure), but it doesn't fully activate.

Hadad feels the energy drained for him as the lights go out. Odd feeling, that. He steps out of the darkness and targets the two foes nearest that aren't blocked by the cloud. The lightning rips from his hands but can't seem to do much. He focuses, then, on the next statue, tempering the lightning just enough to prevent damage, but hopefully still strong enough to jolt the minotaur to join the group.

Hadad's lightning bolts only strike once, hitting the shade dragon. He also manages to jolt the minotaur statue into paying attention (1 challenge success). The nearly destroyed minotaur statue swings at Azad again, but misses in the darkness. The shadow binder glides away without anyone noticing, emerging from the darkness to grab at the red mage of Saruun. The mage deflects the attempt, standing up, and shouts. "I will vanquish this tormential shadow! Stop the ritual and rescue the other mages ere we all be doomed!" He then turns to the shadow binder, raising a clenched fist to his shoulder. Flinging his fist forward, fingers splaying, he incants "Ignafaxius!" as a long tongue of flame shoots out to strike the shadow binder for 30 damage.

As if to punctuate the red mage's words, the blue mage of Saruun cries out in agony as the energy flow being ripped forth is augmented by the death of the little boy on the ground, the mage now able to live longer. At seeing the boy's death, Edeya and Hadad can't help but wonder about the rescued Winterhavians and their hope that you would bring back their children alive. Knowing what just happened by hearing the cry of agony, Anna begins to shake uncontrollably. Seeing her reaction, Corydimbiddle wonders how many other children Anna must have already seen killed.

Azad moves out of the darkness towards Anna and catches her breath. She then turns her attention to the minotaur statue before her. "Obey us! We are the rightful heirs of the Horned Hold! You duty is to follow our commands, not these sorcerous dogs!" The weakness in her limbs leaves her.

Azad correctly remembers that the architecture of the Horned Hold was ancient and only partially resembled dwarven style. Guessing the three bastions may have been created during the times of the minotaur empire of Saruun Khel Azad declares their dominance. The minotaur statue reacts by nodding ever so slightly (1 challenge success on red A).

Edeya moves back and takes aim at the floating shadowy figure. Her confidence rises at the arrow finds its mark. Then she turns her attention to another minotaur statue and calls out "I know this is not your true calling. Your will is being corrupted. Bronze Singer, hear my commands and obey."

Edeya urges her minotaur statue to attack, but it swings wide. She chooses to help Azad take control of another statue before loosing a killing blow at the weakened shadow binder. The red mage shouts at her, "Desist! Save your arrows for the binders still channeling! Break their bonds! I will hold back the other assailants."

A slow chuckle reverberates around the chamber in response to the red mage's words. "You are always braver than your capabilities can support, Tarlesin. Orontor wondered if he should have sent you along with the expedition. He feared you might lead everyone into some glorious battle against the odds just so you could flex your arcane fires. How right he was." speaks the rider on the shade dragon. Looking up you can see him lean over the beast's massive neck. He wears arcane robes not too different from the red mage of Saruun, Tarlesin. He holds an intricately carved staff with a horned top and wears a golden amulet around his neck that pulses in unison with the chanting minotaurs.

Looking up, Tarlesin all but spits his hatred. "PALDEMAR! YOU TRAITOR! We took you in as an orphan. We were going to let you join our ranks. Yet you cast it all aside for delusions and powers you don't understand. Stop this ritual for it will consume you as well!"

The dragon rider laughs again. "I am counting on it. Once I die, I will be reborn more powerful than before, serving my Lord. You and these pitiful few however will not be alive to see it happen and once you die, I will be your Master." Something about those words tickles Edeya's, Azad's, And Corydimbiddle's memories, but before they can make sense of it, the rider urges the shade dragon to attack and it flies into it's own zone of darkness.

All is silent save for the minotaurs chanting....
The air around Demuriath, the minotaur, Hadad, Edeya, Azad, and Tarlesin begins rushing past....
The rush of air stops suddenly as if held in check....
An ear-splitting roar consumes everyones minds, blasting away bravado, leaving fear in its place.
One mind stands firm, Pin-Yin training prevailing.

OOC: Will attack. No damage, but all listed above except Edeya are hit (thanks to her iron mind) and dazed UENT shade dragon.

  •  Features of the Area
    • Illumination: Dim light from the vortex. Otherwise darkness except where you illuminate. I'm assuming someone is using a sunrod, so 20 squares radius light from the party.
      Ceiling:100+ feet high, unable to see the top.
      Bridges: These well-built bridges of stone cross the shadow water 10 feet above the water. A character knocked off the bridge falls into the water. A DC 20 Athletics check to climb up onto from out of the shadow water.
      Squares with triangles: Difficult terrain.

Demuriath understands the being reborn thing. However, power like that should be reserved for him and him alone. He sends shadowy ropes toward the dragon and rider.

Exec. Noose vs rider if possible, dragon otherwise 1d20+9+1=24, 1d6+7=9 Hits FORT 24 for 9 damage. If this hits the dragon, pulling it down 2 squares. If it hits the rider, pulling off the dragon 1 square and letting it fall next to Demuriath.

Demuriath considers whether attacking when nigh-blind inside the darkness is wise, while Corydimbiddle ponders how best to save Anna.

OOC: The dragon and Paldemar are inside the zone of darkness = totally obscured = -5 penalty to attack them. Demuriath gains +2 attack and +3 damage from the shadow vortex taint. That would make Dem's attack 21 vs FORT for 12 damage. Since you didn't realize about the darkness penalty, let me know if you want to keep the attack roll, otherwise re-do your turn.

Josh, please feel free to take Cory's turn meanwhile.
