You head across the street to the Antler and Thistle. The place is moderately full for lunch. You see Andronsius sitting at the bar talking to the barkeep.

The barkeep is the first one to notice you. He lets out resigned sigh, "Well, look who's here. The Liberators. If I knew you were coming, I'd have set fire to the place."

Hedoni sits at the bar and replies, "Admit it - you've missed us - not to mention my rather impressive bar tabs."

Looking very comfortable, Hedoni orders a beverage and scopes out the patrons while the others do their thing.

Ravenbalde joins Hedoni at the bar, taking a seat next to Andronsius (E13). He greets the alchemist with a broad smile. "Hail Andronsius. How has business been?"

As far as Hedoni can tell, it the patrons just seem to be a casual lunch-time crowd.

He notices that the bar has several tasty beverages on tap, including a seasonal pumpkin ale. There isn't too much on the strong end of things - no Barleywines or Imperial Stouts to be seen at all. From the looks and smell of what the other people are eating, the lunch menu today includes a rosemary chicken and rice soup, rabbit dumplings with carrots and gravy, and a treacle tart. Hedoni notices that since you've been here last, the decorations have changed. There are now arrangements of thistles in earthenware jugs on each table and several of the antlers that had been mounted on the wall are gone. A hearty fire burns in the central fire place.

The barkeep decides to accept his fate and responds to Hedoni "How about a nice Allagash White? I just got a shipment in from Sayre. It'll go nice with the rabbit."

As opposed to the barman, Andronsius looks pleased to see you. He answers "Hail Ravenblade, and the rest of you my friends! What a surprise! Business is fine." Then he looks down and frowns, something is troubling him.

Frowning and catching the shift in Andronsius' emotions, Ravenblade responds. "We're glad to see you too, especially me. I will always remember your help in clearing my name. I only wish there was some way I could repay you in kind. I owe you." he tells the alchemist, giving him the opening to ask for help if needed without losing face.

Andronsius confides, "You see, the trouble is my wife, or rather it isn't my wife, or well my wife ..." he stammers trying to phrase his delicate problem when the barkeep says simply "His wife left him."

Andronsius looks upset and corrects him "Look here, we don't know what happened. Perhaps she's in trouble or she got lost or, well, I just can't believe she'd leave me." He finishes with despair.

The barkeep replies "That's what they all say. Take for instance my first wife, Martha. Why, the day before she left me, she cleaned all the guest rooms, did all the washing, polished the glassware, swept out the hearth, fetched new logs, and even darned four pairs of my old socks - the same things she did every night with nary a complaint. Then she up and disappears without a warning. Later that month, my cousin George in RedRock told me he saw her with the miller. Now, my current wife, Gertrude, she threatens everyday to leave me and hardly does a stitch of work around here." He shakes his head "Women!" He says the last word with punctuated exasperation, so that this should be the final word on the subject.

Salazar sits on the other side of Andronsius. "Did she say anything, or leave a note? Was she on a trip and never returned? These lands can be dangerous, and she may not have been able to return if... well, we found you in Rivenroar, after all. She may need some help now, too."

Andronsius answers slowly "I must admit, we quarreled the night before. I told her to go to the far field and gather some wormwood leaves before the last of the good ones withered. What with winter coming on, I thought this would be our last chance to collect some for the pain treatments. She left in the morning with her kit and her basket, giving me the silent treatment. This was four days ago. I figured she'd get over it; she always did." He trails off sadly.

"If she only took her usual equipment with her, and no spare clothes and the like, maybe she did end up in trouble. If she was planning to go, she'd probably have planned ahead. Can you take us to where she was supposed to go, Andronsius? There may be signs there that Ravenblade can decipher."

Andronsius looks relieved to hear your offer of help. "Oh, you are too kind! Of course I can show you where she was, or at least where I think she was. I know the way to the wormwood fields well."

You follow Andronsius out the door and as soon as you step out onto the city street, an earthquake hits.

Elsewhere, several minutes before the earthquake in Brindol…

OOC: You will be playing the role of the Freeriders. The outcome of this encounter will affect the Liberators shortly. I have asigned roles.
  •   Josh will play Megan
Megan Swiftblade was the pretty daughter of a poor farmer not far from Brindol. When the Red Hand invaded the Vale, the goblins and dragonspawn slew her family and left her scarred—physically and emotionally. She spent the last decade honing her fighting skills, vowing she would give her life to protect innocents from the encroaching darkness so other young people would never face the horrors she was forced to endure.

As the leader of the Freeriders, Megan sees her fellow adventurers as extended family and is protective of them—protective to the point that conflicts sometimes arise. She can come off as brusque, but she means well and is fearless in battle. Megan is sword thin with an attractive figure, keeps her blond hair cut short, and has a vicious scar that runs from her forehead and down her left cheek.

      User posted image
  •   Marek will play Ragnum
The heart of the Freeriders is Ragnum Dourstone, a graying dwarf priest of Moradin. Born and raised in Overlook, he left the city in disgust after witnessing the decay in his church. Although estranged from his kin, he would not abandon the city to the orc armies and so he convinced his companions to make the journey west.

Ragnum is just over 4-1/2 feet tall and weighs upward of 200 pounds. He has auburn hair streaked with gray and a thick beard he wears in braids. Gruff and serious, he believes in doing his duty with honor and is an implacable foe when crossed.
      User posted image
  •   Viktor will play Slyen
Born in the Westdeep, Sylen left his woodland home, disagreeing with their distrust and remembering how his people aided in the defense of the Vale against the Red Hand. He fell in with Megan and began a torrid love affair that has endured over the years. Although he feels strongly for the woman, he is secretly ashamed, feeling as though he has betrayed his people and his culture by his dalliance in human realms.

Sylen is whip thin, with long brown hair and angular features that give him the look of a fox. He’s most comfortable in his hunting garb and wears clothing dyed in greens and browns. He’s friendly and a constant companion, keeping his secret guilt close to his heart.

      User posted image
  •   Mike will play Ghena
An arcanist of some talent, Ghena was apprenticed to a wizard who helped save the Elsir Vale from the Red Hand a decade past. When she had learned all she could, she left to find her own place in the world. Ghena is content to work with the Freeriders, but sees it as a short-term venture, since she believes she’s destined for greatness, far more than her current companions will ever achieve.

Short, pudgy, with a round face and small eyes, she has shoulder-length blond hair, a face full of freckles, and long, slender fingers. She wears traveling clothes and carries a black staff with silver ferrules at either end.

      User posted image
  •   Gary will play Madrick
Madrick never planned on becoming an adventurer; he was content in his forest home in the Feywild with his pet raccoon, Bandit. However, the formorians raided his community, and only by his quick wit and a timely warning from Bandit did Madrick escape. Unfortunately for him, he went through a doorway into the natural world. Confused, surprised, and a little homesick, Madrick took up with the Freeriders for lack of anything else to do and has remained with them ever since. Although he enjoys their company, he’s always looking for a way back to his home so he might rescue his captured kin.

Madrick is short, with pale skin, and large black eyes. He wears brown and gray clothing to help him sneak about. His best friend in the world is Bandit and the raccoon is never far from his side.

You’ve tracked Sarshan from Umbraforge to his new base, an efreet mage’s tower in the Elemental Chaos. It took almost two months of spying, laying low, keeping your ear to the ground, and generally trying not to get yourselves killed in the Shadowfell. Finally, you intercepted some documents with Sarshan’s new location: obsidian monolith floating in an island set in the midst of the Sea of Fire. The documents also reference shunting of huge amounts of something called ‘blood chaos’ between the planes. Disguised as Sarshan’s couriers and using a stolen teleportation key you use one of the portals that supposedly leads to his new lair.

As you shift through the haze of the portal, you emerge on a wooden platform set upon the skeletal branch of an immense oak tree. This stands in the middle of a dismal, fog-shrouded swamp, the tree surrounded by a lake of viscous purple-red ooze. The tree’s huge roots snake through the boiling ooze like great vipers, while above you, a thick canopy of leaves cuts the light to a perpetual gloom.

Multiple shadar-kai lurk between the roots. The leader, a gaunt shadar-kai witch in tight-fitting garb, approaches. Dark flames wreathe her hands. At the sight of you, she looks at you suspicsiously “What’s the password?”

Megan doesn't remember hearing anything about a specific password. They've heard alot about a substance called Blood chaos. Supposedly Sarshan is now camped out in the tower of Djamela, the being who first created Blood Chaos. Megan gets the sense that the shadar-kai witch does not trust them at all, that they are not who the shadar-kai was expecting.

OOC: For simplicity's sake I'll say everyone has 1 AP and 4 surges.

Sylen turns his foxish face around, his long brown hair flowing from side to side, looking at each shadar-kai surrounding them. His calculating eyes gauge their distance to him and Megan and the terrain in between. Knowing shadar-kai, some of them might be hiding or invisible. Casting his gaze from the roots all the way to the top, Sylen wonders how old this magnificent oak must have been in times past.

Satisfied with the surroundings, Sylen raises his left eyebrow and wonders if he recalls hearing a password anywhere. Unlikely. He prepares for the inevitable skirmish, although it wouldn't be the first time that Megan pulled off the unexpected.

Sylen doesn't know much about the shadar-kai race, only what he sees with his own two eyes. The people before them resemble humans but have gray skin and eyes that are lustrous black orbs, like a raven’s.

Examining his surroundings, Sylen immediately recognizes the giant tree before them. It is the Ever-Tree, a legendary and ancient oak. The wide, swampy lake surrounding the Ever-Tree consists of a layer of purple-red ooze floating atop the water. Sylen has never seen anything like it before. The oozing stuff looks acidic and hot, as if it could melt living flesh.

He's too distracted by their queer surroundings and can't really guess what the password might be.

One of the warriors asks the witch, "Since when did we have a password Liliaceae?" The shadar-kai witch smiles maliciously "We don't Codren. We were expecting a gythyanki deligation, not this pitiable debris. I was just playing with them." Then she calls out to the others and makes her intentions clear, "Keep one or two alive for questioning, but kill the rest."

Sylen silently picks his prey, then swifly nocks two arrows, firing them in quick succession. Both arrows thunk into the Ever-Tree.

Minor: HQ on brown stalker
Standard: Twin Strike, +1 24h, vs AC, targets brown stalker and green warrior (1d20+15+1=18, 1d10=7, 1d20+15+1=17, 1d10=6)
Move: to C4
Free: ready Yield Ground

OOC: Second arrow was a roll of 1. I'm a little confused by Sylen's Cut and Run and his longbow basic attack details. I think the attack should be +15 for all longbow attacks, but there are three different types of damage rolls (2d6+6, 1d10+4, and 3d8+5). Please clarify.

  •  Slyen
