Geen Fettenbar enters Morgrave University with a letter of introduction. It has been four years since he and his home were ripped into Eberron from the Feywild. He knew something was wrong and felt an immediate calling to fix the situation. Soon, he learned of the Mourning, and the devastation it wrought upon a land called Cyre. His investigations have led him to believe that he has two courses of action: discover the cause of the Mourning and reverse it or find a way to create a portal to the Feywild. After hearing about the horrors of the Mournland, Geen has decided to take the latter path...at least until he feels capable of surviving in the Mournland.

Geen learned that the denizens of Eberron have often fought with those from other planes and seem to be in a constant struggle to close off planar rifts. In his investigation, he found that the local orc druid tribe called the Gatekeepers had closed Eberron off from Xoriat, the plane of madness, around 10,000 years ago. In the process, Geen learned of a powerful hobgoblin artifact, the Ashen Crown. He, unfortunately, has learned little about the artifact, but is hopeful it will pave the way to rescuing his home. The wilden has learned the name of an expert of Dhakaani civilization, Prof. Gydd Nephret of Morgrave University. The letter he holds comes from one of Geen's contacts that was a student at the school.

Geen has been uncomfortable walking through the great city of Sharn, but he does it with great determination; it is a far cry from the forests that he is familiar with. Even with a number of unusual inhabitants, Geen still feels he is being stared at. With resolve, he has found the university and Prof. Nephret's office. He walks up to the white door and raps it lightly. The door opens and a half-elf woman peeks her head out and says, "Yes?"

Geen is surprised to see just how pretty Nephret is. and can't help but look surprised. He stutters his first word.

"Go-Good afternoon. Are you Professor Nephret?" asks Geen, wondering to himself how someone so young could have such a title.

Assuming she answers positively, Geen will continue.

"This is for you." says Geen. He already has the letter in hand, having had it out since her entered the building. He passes the letter of introduction to the female half-elf and waits outside the office. He peers inside though, looking to see what is inside and if anyone else is in there, perhaps the actual professor.

Prof. Nephret looks at the wilden strangely, something he is used to by now. "Yes, yes I am." She takes the letter and starts reading. "It is pleasant to meet you, Mr. Fettenbar. Won't you come inside?" She says leading him in. There are a couple of chairs and a desk. The office has an open balcony with a view looking out at the towers of Sharn. There is no one else inside the room.

Geen looks nervously at the open air balcony, and makes his was slowly over to it, and closes the door. Without glancing at Nephret, he walks over to a chair and sits down, leaning forward, again looking at her walls with the pictures, plaques, and whatever other trinkets or collectibles there may be.

"What? Oh, uhmmm, Geen is fine. Call me Geen. So....? Stoll's letter of reference is sufficient?" asks Geen.

OOC-Just adding some color, and gave the student whose recommendation I have. a name. "Stoll Ackens".

"Ok, Geen. Of course, Stoll's letter is sufficient. He was an excellent student. I heard that he is studying some of the ancient sites in the Eldeen Reaches. How is he doing?"

OOC: Generally for OOC comments we italicize them. Also, when we get to an encounter and you take your turn, try to offset your actions from your description. Making up the name is great, I was leaving it open for you to do so :)

"His studies are moving along. The Eldeen Reaches is a vast and mysterious place. If it wasn't for my current studies, I'd still be there doing work." says Geen, as he smiles at the young professor.

"As to that, I seek some information which I'm told you can help me with. I'd like to learn more about the Dhakanni and their lost artifacts. This holds much interest for me. I wouldn't be against heading a search for some long, lost artifact. That is my short-term goal." says Geen.

He still sits on the edge of the chair, leaning forward some, still not totally relaxed.

"Ah ha! Well, I can certainly help you with Dhakaani artifacts. What are you looking for in particular?"

"Well....I have done some recent studies of the Dhakanni Empire and the Gatekeepers. All intriguing parts of history. There seems to be indications of an ancient lost relic called the Ashen Crown. I'd like to learn more and would like my studies to continue in this area. I've been told you are an expert on this part of history." says Geen.

Geen sits back a little bit, getting a bit more comfortable with his surroundings.

"Ah, yes the Ashen Crown. It supposedly has the most extraordinary properties. For one, it can fragment into several pieces, each with their own abilities.

My research has led me to believe it is capable of some form of interdimensional transfer of information. Unfortunately, as it was lost 10 millenia ago and the Dhakaani Empire fell into a long dark age, there is not much record about this. Fortunately, though, my research has led me to the location of one of the fragments...underneath this very city!

In fact, I often engage a group of goblins to search for old artifacts for me. They left searching for this portion about a week ago and I haven't heard from them since."
Suddenly, as if thinking about the possibility for the first time, Prof. Nephret gets a horrified look on her face, "You, you don't think they are hurt, do you?"

"Well...my studies on goblins isn't very vast. In fact, I do not know much about goblin modern life. I've only studied the texts of their old empire. If they were not prepared for such an endeavor, then they could certainly have ran into a calamity." says Geen, leaving that last word hanging there.

Geen takes a long pause, reading her reactions.

"Oh, that would be most unfortunate." She frowns a little, but can't seem to focus on the bad news too much. "We have worked quite well together for some time. Much of my research has been investigating the items they have found for me. In fact, I think that I identified Ashurta's tomb from the last item they found for me. THAT would be a very exciting discovery indeed!" She says, getting a little ahead of herself.

"Ashurta's Tomb? Is this where you believe another piece of the Ashen Crown may be at? Are you, or shall I say, the university sanctioning a new expeditions?" asks Geen.

Looking very anxious, he stands up, facing the young professor.

"Look. I've done my research and all I have been doing the last couple years is training for such a task. I can't vouch for those goblins, but if the right team was put together, well, the sky is the limit as to what we may discover and what mysteries we may unravel." says Geen,

OOC-I know we have started, and I forgot to ask you this earlier, but given my chr's background and such, I think it would be good for him to have training in history. Can I swap Athletics for history? I don't think a ranger gets a choice of history, but it just fits. Perhaps houseruled? Perhaps as a DM bonus?

"Oh, I think I may have said too much. I don't even really know you. My research indicates that Ashurta wielded a blade that thirsted for the blood of the daelkyr. The texts indicate that the Dhakaani of that period had a pattern of burying their greatest heroes with their personal arcane devices. They would then place elaborate restrictive mechanisms to keep looters away. The Dhakaani believed only in honor and strength, so the only way to obtain the item would be to prove one had both.

Ashurta's tomb, I believe, is directly under this majestic city. I cannot let you go alone, though. And I would have to discuss with my contact whether or not he would allow you to go. I am sure you understand..."

OOC: Maybe you can change your background to something that gives you History as a Class Skill?

"Very good, then. I am staying very close by, just outside the university. Shall I await your contacting me? From what you've said, we'll need a group that is diverse enough to handle almost any situation. I hate to say tomb raiders, but I just may know where to look to acquire services of one so tooled." offers Geen.

OOC-I will look into a background that offers history. Any suggestions?

OOC: My intention was for them to actually run into you here, so we may have to wait a few days. As far as History backgrounds...there are no Eberron specific ones it looks like (unless you want to say you spent time in an Aundair city...Aundair is the nation that the Eldeen Reaches broke away from in the Last War...so not necessarily out of the realm for you). Generic ones that could work: Birth - Omen (the Omen being the Mourning), Pivotal Event - Portal Mishap, Recent Life - Explorer of the Ancient (probably the best), Treasure Hunter, Wilden - Ancient One.

OOC-I'm sorry if I moved too fast. If you wish to have them meet me here, I'm fine w/ however you want this to go. It seemed a little more realistic for me to have to wait and anticipate :)

I like the Explorer of the Ancient, so I'm gonna go with that. I'll just end up non-athletic wilden ranger...

OOC: Oh, don't worry about that. They have moved slow. And part of the difficulty of running two threads and connecting them is how to pace them properly.

Before Geen can get up to leave, there is a knock at the office door.

"Oh, another visitor. Let me get that." Prof. Nephret stands up and walks to the door.

Lan looks over his shoulders at his companions, raising his eyebrows. "Maybe the professor is not in. We can try again later."

The door opens and Prof. Nephret looks outside, seeing four heavily armed people. She can see an attractive human, a warforged, a scared-looking gnome, and a mean-looking half-orc. "Yes?"

The four adventurers, meanwhile, look into the room as the door opens. They see a half-elf female at the door and someone sitting in a chair that they can't figure out if it is a tree that moves or a person that has been in the woods too long.

OOC: Yeah, sorry about that...I have been pretty busy in the last day. Now...mingle!

Smiling, Lan holds out his hand in greeting. "Hello, my name is Lan. These are my friends, Sentinel, Kurvilis, and Khav. We are looking for Professor Nephret. A mutual acquaintance, Olaaki, sent us here."

"Pleased to meet you all," Prof. Nephret replies, not quite letting you in. "And why did Olaakki send you here?"

Geen stands up and peers out towards the door at the newcomers. His bushy eyebrows slanting some, a curious look indeed.

A cracks a tiny smile and nods his head, the hairs on his face bristling as he does so. His hair long and stubby, and formed into a 'V' shape, the point of the V forward on his head.

"I am not the decoration." says Geen, in a flat monotone voice.

Khav squints at the tree person and tries to figure out what he... she... it... whatever is. He thinks he might have seen the like once or twice in the Shadow Marches.
