OOC: Is it too late to have used a surge? If I can, Salazar will use one pre-encounter. Daggoth might also want to burn a surge.

"Hmmmm.....maybe we can reason with that dragon and ask it to give up it's hoard?" muses Ravenblade while looking around for hidden threats. "Hedoni, your magical light might help here, although we could use a second light source as well. I'm going to need my hands free for climbing and hammering. However, we might want to move closer first before announcing our presence to the dragon with a beacon of light."

Perception on the surroundings. (1d20+14+1=32)

OOC: That -5 darkness debuff is pretty bad, so we definitely need some lights. I think walking closer or sneaking closer before using light might be a good idea though.

Daggoth raises an eyebrow at Ravenblade...

"Yeah... this whole sneaking thing does not work for me... The way this armor clanks I might as well have brought along my own trumpeter and standard bearer to announce my arrival."

OOC: agreeing with Gary on using an extra surge. This went to the next encounter a little faster than I anticipated.

Realizing you are at your goal and that the Wayfinder was leading you to this dragon, you hesitate before deciding how best to procede. The dragon doesn't seem to be disturbed by your presence, yet.

OOC: Sorry if I went too fast. Salazar and Daggoth both use a surge to get to full. Feel free to turn on some lights and/or talk to the dragon.

The path you are on is old and not often traveled. There doesn't appear to be any creatures hiding in the trees or plants and you don't see any traps or hazards.

Ravenblade has sharp eyes and can see the dragon up on the cliff. It seems to be resting. The dwarf can just make out a thin metal chain around one of the beast's ankles. User posted image

"That's a gorgeous green dragon up there. Quite magnificent and proud looking. I think it's a she-dragon, but I'm not a dragonologist so who knows. I wonder why it's wearing a metal chain on an ankle. Maybe we could ask her? Mal, do you want to give it a go, you've got a way with words and besides, maybe the your mutual horns will be a common starting ground." relates Ravenblade rather stupidly, based on his limited knowledge of dragons.

Ravenblade knows that this is a green dragon. They live primarily in forests and are often drawn to locations connected to the Feywild.

Although you haven't had much association with dragons, Hedoni and Ravenblade get the sense that this dragon has an air of melancoly about it. (Passive Insight).

Mal calls out to the dragon. The creature answers forlornly, "I had actually started to believe you would not come, that I would be left in peace, but I suppose it was too much to hope for." Although the creature responds calmly enough to Mal's words, it seems like the dragon didn't actually hear what Mal asked.

OOC: If you're not fighting, I'll treat this as a modified skill challenge. The more good rolls you get, the more information and experience you'll get. So far I'll credit you three successes.

Salazar's gold dragonling takes wing from his shoulder and flies next to the sorcerer. The pair step forward boldly, and Salazar calls out to the dragon, "Hail, great and mighty dragon! We have been brought to this place by powerful magic, though we know not why that magic has laid this path before our feet. Perhaps our quest is to relieve you of your melancholy and bring you the peace that you seem to long for so greatly. Tells us, scale sibling - what troubles you?"

Minor action - Switch dragonling familiar to active mode).

Move action - Move Salazar to R8 and dragonling to R7.

Standard action - Diplomacy check.

Diplomacy 34 (and maybe a bonus for flaunting the dragonling? ;) )

Readying Sudden Scales, Fog Form, and Belt of Raging Endurance in that order (just in case).

At first the green dragon seems puzzled by Salazar's speech and it examines your group more closely. "Who are you? There is only one fey among you. Usually she sends a team of centaurs and cyclopses."

The dragon's confusion seems to allow the creature to consider and actually comprehending Mal's question. The dragon blinks in thought and sputters "Of course I am The Dawn. What's this you say about your father? He sought me out?" Then the beast sinks back into sadness, "I suppose your father gave you my Wayfinder and passed on his job as a harvester." The dragon says the last word a deep bitterness and looks at though it might start to cry.

Four successes so far.

Salazar says quietly to the rest of the Liberators, "So, how many 'she's' do we know who send teams of centaurs make collections? I'm guessing the Stone-Skinned Queen's involved here..."

"Harvesters, harvester..." Salazar muses.

"Hmmmm....you're probably right Salazar. I sense that this may be a case of a mother losing her children. This queen might be stealing her eggs, but I wonder how she can compel this dragon? Well, just in case, I'll scout ahead. Feel free to stay where you are and just give me the signal when you want to move from here all the way up there. I can use the roots in the ground to instantly transport you." he comments before moving off and keeping the dragon in his sights.

Double-Move: to L8
Minor: HQ on green dragon

OOC: Guys, Ravenblade has a new daily utility called Root Gate. You can check the details in his drop-down or the pdf link. In this instance, from L8, I can create a zone near where the group is clustered (range is burst 10 from Rav's position) and a second zone up by the dragon (e.g. C1). Only allies can teleport from one zone to the other as a free action as long as the destination zone is unoccupied. If you go through the zone, make sure not to stop in that spot so others can also go through.

Before leaving Olorin's, Headmaster Aurythria gave Salazar several classic and scholarly works on dragons. The sorcerer actually read them and remembered almost all of what they said.

The most well known and exhaustive text on dragons, "Dragons from Azure to Zinc: a Natural and Arcane History,” was written by an eladrin named Childemass. This eladrin mage and scholar spent over a century observing them in the wild, taking notes on their parenting practices, mating rituals, hunting practices, etc. Childemass was said to have spent months observing a pair of reds roosting on an active volcano, followed a white through a blizzard to study it’s aerial hunting technique, and lived of nothing but fish and sea plants for a year studying an elder blue on a remote island. This mage was the first to theorize that colored dragons were more devious, greedy, and predatory while metallic dragons generally have very opposite nature, tending towards nobility and virtue. He later amended his theory of chromatic vs metallic dragons to state that there are exceptions to the “colored as corrupt/ metal as moral” rule. In his masterwork, Childemass writes, “Many of the chromatic breeds fail to live up to those lofty ideals of morality and succumb to a selfishness and aggression that seems common among all of dragonkind.”

As Childemass’s reputation as a dragon expert grew, his stamina lessened. Age and possibly the hiking of one two many active volcanoes began to take its toll on the dragon naturalist. He began to take on apprentices and assistants to help him organize his copious notes and catalogue his large collection of dragon bones, talons, and scales. One of his assistants, a brilliant, but lazy, elf named Indolath was assigned to record the hunting territories of very old green. After slogging back and forth through a particularly rotten smelling bog for a few days, Indolath came up with an idea of magically tagging and tracking the dragon he was studying to significantly reduce the time he would have to spend covered in loathsome mud.

Indolath never got very far with this idea, being too slothful to fully develop it. However a fellow apprentice of Childemass, Granger, who was much more diligent, if less imaginative, eventually did develop a such a device. It emitted an invisible, but unique signal that he could use to find the creature, no matter where it might be dwelling. After inventing the arcane tracking system, he found that tagging an adult or even a juvenile dragon exceedingly difficult. However, after many years, he did manage to pierce the ear of a very young black dragon and track its migration and hunting patterns. From this research he published his most well known work, “Beware a Dragon Pierced and Other Observations on Black Dragons.”

After reading some of her husband’s notes, Granger’s wife, discovered that dragons instinctively and compulsively gather treasure, often called its hoard. Mrs. Granger probably had hint of dragon blood in her own veins, for she was an exceedingly greedy and selfish woman. Mrs. Granger asked her husband if he could not collect some of this treasure, for scientific research. Especially since he could so easily follow a dragon and pin point the exact location of his lair and his hoard. Although he was dubious of the idea of interfering with the creature’s natural habitat, his wife nonetheless persuaded him to routine gather samples of the hoards of the various dragons he was studying. This practice of tagging dragons and periodically gleaning their treasure was euphemistically called “harvesting” and it’s practice was outlawed by the Interplanar Endangered Creatures Act 125 years ago.

OOC: Okay, no more knowledge crits allowed. Or at least no more history ones. :)

Continuing on what Mal started, Hedoni adds, "Indeed - if there's some magic in your tracking device, we could remove, or at least disable it. It's the least we could do for your time answering our questions. If you'd just let us take a look..."

As he trails off, he gets the distinct impression that the dragon doesn't trust Eladrin.

OOC: Nice touch to speak draconic, Marek! I should have done that. :)

The dragon tells its story "Ever since I can remember I've had this thing around my ankle." it wiggles its foot for emphasis and the chain around it clinks softly. "When I was about 25 years old, I'd made my lair in lovely swap and amassed a very small, but not cheap, collection of treasure. I'll never forget the day that group of centaurs and cyclopses came to my home and robbed me. I fought with all my might, but being a young and inexperience dragon, I didn't last long. They left me alive, but took every gold piece I'd amassed."

"I was angry and confused, but reasoned that at least I was alive. I moved to a new location, a deep cave with the most beautiful stallagtites you'll ever see. As is my nature, I began collecting a new hoard. I'd managed to collect a lovely pile of gold and jewels, when another group of fey came. This time I noticed that they held a round object with a star on it. It matches the one on my chain. I realized at once that they had found me by way of this star object and were going to take my treasure. I fought tooth and claw to keep them out, even killed a few, but to no avail. The thieves knocked me out and took all my precious, beautiful things.

"After that, I sank into a deep depression. What is the point of being a dragon in this world if you know theives will come and take it all away? I tried not to collect. I thought I could abstain from a hoard, and then they'd leave me alone. But I just couldn't resist. From the scales on my skin to the acid in my blood, it is part of my being to collect treasure.

"So it continued for decades. Every ten years or so, the thieves would come for my hoard. It had been over 30 years since the last group came and I'd thought maybe it was over, that I'd be free of them
."

Then hearing Hedoni's offer to remove the tracking device the dragon voice becomes tight with emotion and hope "Could you do that? Get this thing off? Oh, that is my greatist wish. Not an hour goes by that I imagine this cursed thing gone."

OOC: I'll count that at seven successes.

Seeing a good chance to be useful, Hedoni calls out, "Dragon, if you'll allow me, I wish to come close and inspect the object, perchance to remove it." He then gets closer to the base of the cliff and teleports to the top, giving himself plenty of room to account for the odd Fey distortions. He examines the arcane device on the beast's leg, and smiles to himself.

Move Action: Move to S9
Move Action: Arcane Gate between R9 and -A-1 (off map, to allow for 4 spaces on each side).
Standard Action (AP, if needed): Arcana check to examine/remove arcane tracking device.

Arcana Check: (1d20+17+1=35)

OOC: Arcane Gate remains open to allow for others to teleport up.

Hedoni uses his arcane gate to teleport up to the top of the cliff. Although he appears about 10 feet away from where he'd expected to be, he safely walks over to work on the dragon's tracking device. The wizard easily sees how to sever the magical bond and the chain disolves into thin air.

The dragon's eyes go wide as if barely believing what it just witnessed. Then the beast's eyes shift from its now naked ankle to Hedoni. "Thank you, thank you! I am too astonished to thank you properly. This is amazing! " It pauses as a thought occurs to it, "And it means I can collect treasure again, as much as I want! I don't have to hold back!" Then the dragon's eyes catch on something sparkly around Hedoni's neck. "Oh, that is a lovely amulet you have. Is it gold?" it asks almost absent mindedly.
