Korrin looks to Tartuk to make certain he is dead, and to ascertain if he is holding anything of importance, especially something that can explain why he was able to take control of Korrin's actions.

Uriah smiles into the shadows of his cowl, pleased that the battle was concluded without any important losses. He fades back towards the walls, so that no one would be able see him roll his eyes when the kobold chiefling, whatever his name was, begins boasting and trying to take credit for the victory. Trying to tune out the incessant kobold yapping, he examines what can be seen of the ex-shaman's religious trappings, idly musing on what kind of being might have lent Tartuk his power, and whether they were likely to be vengeful.

For those not in my other games (Greg?) I wanted to apologize for vanishing and the sustained absence. As I said in posts in the other games, the last several months have royally sucked for a host of reasons. They are thankfully over, and I hope to be back in proper form.

Korrin and Uriah don't find anything on Tartuk of a genuine religious nature. The staff he held was actually a human-size arcane rod, based on the symbols carved upon it. Tartuk's pouches are also full of powders the religious heroes recognize as ritual components for arcane rituals. Between Korrin, Uriah, Magda, and Aluric, the party realizes that Tartuk was, in fact some sort of sorcerer, and not a priest or shaman at all.

Variel discovers a hidden nook behind the display case with the gnome skeleton. Within the hiding place, the elf finds three suits of armor, all of excellent quality, but all too heavy for the slight Tartuk to have used himself. He also finds a journal written in Elven. Reading though it quickly, Variel realizes it belonged to Tartuk.

The journal reveals that the kobold shaman was, in fact, once a gnome sorcerer. Tartuk describes an invasion of his community by kobolds, and how he tried to strike a deal with them to save his skin and sell out his neighbors. The kobolds betrayed him and killed him, and when the village defeated the kobolds anyway, they misinterpreted Tartuk's death as a valiant attempt to stop the invaders. They asked a local druid to revive him, and the druid's most powerful spell did return Tartuk, but as a kobold with scales the same vivid purple as the former gnome's hair. Overcome by these events, and receiving strange, fearful looks wherever he went, he snuck away from his village one night, vowing to destroy as many kobolds as he could before throwing his wasted second life away. The armor, the journal indicates, are trophies of previous chief's he has overthrown and tribes he's ruined.

Chief Sootscale approaches the party. "Thank you for help. In thanks, I give you the last loot we stole from mites, and you are welcome to that devil's possession. We want no trace of him to remain here. You are all always welcome by Sootscale clan. If I can help you one day, you say so, I do."

OOC: The party receives 450 XP, for 75 XP per character, from the Chief negotiation skill challenge and 1,400 XP, for 233 XP per character, from the Tartuk fight. This puts the party at 14,920 XP for the six PC's, and 2,487 XP per PC. Fourth level is at 3,750 XP.

The party gains 100 GP-worth of arcane ritual components from Tartuk.

The treasure from the mites is 100 GP-worth of various coins and cheap jewelry, and one simple ring of silver with a small purple stone. You recognize this as Svetlana's wedding ring, based on the description Oleg gave you before leaving for the bandit camp.

The armors are...

Do you have anything more you want to do here, or anything else you want to discuss with the kobolds? I'll move us back to Oleg's if not.

Dibs on the Divine Retribution armor ;) I'll be overstepping my bounds, but in the interest of moving the story along, I'll not consult with everyone. Just complain if Variel makes an offer he cannot back.
"Chief Sootscale, there are a few things to discuss before we leave. A human empire to the north plans to begin settling this land. Imagine each member of your tribe was a tribe himself.. that many warriors is but one of many armies they have. We have been sent ahead of these humans to scout and prepare the land for them. I have no desire to disrupt your way of life. It would be best to have a formal agreement in-place now, before caravans and people come through. I suggest that you not attack humans traveling under our banner, and in return, we will grant the mite stronghold as an additional home. We can firm up land that will be avoided by settlers and left to you at another time. Trade could be beneficial for both our peoples. In addition, we would be very interested to know if your scouts find any bandits, powerful animals, or magical creatures in the surrounding areas."

Chief Sootscale nods vigorously. "If all humans as powerful as you" - he seems to lump all of you all folks in as "humans," pointy ears, large beards, steel skin or not - "we no want fight with them. And we want mite lair for long time. With two lairs, Sootscale clan can grow very big. I accept your deal. We tell you about anything strange we find."

Uriah is content to let Variel do the talking, as he examines the treasure from the dead shaman's hoard.

OOC: The divine retribution is chain, isn't it? Which Variel can't wear? Uriah would be interested, but only for the enhancement bonus. The reaction power isn't as good as Uriah's current immediate reaction when hit, and he doesn't get hit often enough to need two such powers. All of which is a long way of saying, it's better than what I'm wearing, but I don't mind passing it on if someone else can make better use of it.

Oops! I was thinking Divine Retribution fit Uriah's personality, but forgot he had the same basic power as a class feature. Scratch the Divine Retribution Armor, then, and this is the chain armor instead.

When you return to Oleg's, the guards - know familiar with you - wave cheerily and open the gate as you approach. Oleg and Svetlana are waiting to meet you in the courtyard, having apparently been informed of your approach by the guards on the wall.

"What happened with the kobolds and that crazy statue? Did you find Svetlana's ring?" Oleg asks enthusiastically.

Svetlana looks at the party hopefully, despite her previous talk of the ring not being important. "I'm happy to see you all return safe," she says.

Feeling it is not his place to discuss the ring, Variel glances at Magda and says "The kobolds have been released from their religious bondage, and are now nominal allies. I sincerely hope that deal continues and strengthens."

Magda gives Svetlana her ring back cheerily, "This is it right? Oh, we should have some kind of celebration! or maybe even a ceremony with rededication and vows?" Seeing Oleg's skeptical look the cleric amends, "Perhaps just a party then? There must be someone here who can play a musical instrament. And I can help cook up a really special meal."

OOC: It's been awhile so I could use a bit of a refresher.

As preparations for the party begin, Variel starts to mutter at SAMAV. "Lets see, we've retrieved the wedding ring, removed the mites, allied with the kobolds, and wrecked a bandit group. Other bandits are almost certainly still active, which is one route we could take. The Stag Lord's still out there camped at the mouth of the Horn River... That's south. We also have barely explored the land itself. This trading post is a good start, but we'll need readily cleared farmland and easy transportation routes once settlement begins. That means getting out and exploring the countryside."

As an aside to Korrin, "How would you feel about looking for Jhod's long lost temple? It'll get us out into the field, and give us a change to scout some land. Plus, you might get lucky and get to spend some time underground."

Svetlana takes her ring back from Magda and puts it on, then gives the cleric a fierce hug. "Oh, thank you! I can't tell you how much this means to me. I thought I'd never see it again. Thank you!"

Oleg smiles widely at seeing his wife so happy, slapping Variel on the back and staggering the elf. "You lot are all right, I'll give you that. First you chase off bandits, then you get Svetlana's ring. I don't think we'd even still be here, as much as we tried to stick it out, if you hadn't shown up when you did. And to see my sweet pumpkin so happy! Svetlana may not be able to say how much this means, but I can try. Each of you folks now have 200 gold in trading post credit. If there's anything you need, let me know, and I'll do everything I can to get it from my contacts in Restov."

Later, over a particularly boisterous meal, joined by Jhod the priest and Kesten the sergeant, and featuring many pies (for Takeo) and much ale (for Aluric), Oleg mentions something else you might be able to do for him. "These lands are known for being infested with tatzlwyrms. They're small, but particularly vicious dragons. If you could bring me back a tatzlwyrm head, it'd look great mounted right there, he gestures towards the empty space over the hearth, and really give this place some character, something to tell the folks back home about. Business should be picking up soon with the bandits quiet and the kobolds all friendly like now, so I should be able to put together another nice reward for you if you can find one"

Kesten nods. "That reminds me of a couple of things. I've sent word north about your work with the bandits and the kobolds. I'd expect a reward to come your way from Restov soon. The Swordlords will be pleased. And as for hunting dangerous animals, a friend of mine back home named Vekkel lost a leg to Tuskgutter." Oleg sighs upon hearing this. He appears to have heard of the beast. "Tuskgetter's a very, very nasty boar that lives somewhere in the Greenbelt. I posted that wanted poster over there, he points at the wall, on his behalf. If you could get Tuskgutter's head, Vekkel's offering a handsome reward."

Svetlana rolls her eyes at the men. "If you could bring back some moon radishes from the patch about 16 miles south of here, I'd appreciate it, and you wouldn't have to cut anything's head off. The patch can be hard to find, though. Moon radishes make a tasty soup," she confides to Magda.

OOC: The party receives 2,400 XP, for 400 XP per character, from the Svetlana's Ring and Kobold Tribe quests, as well as fantastic role-playing and abundant patience. This puts the party at 17,920 XP for the six PC's, and 2,987 XP per PC (my spreadsheet had an incorrct formula and my earlier post was shortchanging you). Fourth level is at 3,750 XP.

The adventure (along with a recap of your possible options) continues here.
