"So, are we gonna wait for the bugs to come to us, or are we gonna go hunt them down?"

OOC: I think I'm in the "assuming a fight's about to break out since there's a map" crowd.

"The tunnels could be a complex maze. Here we have space to maneuver and an escape route if it comes to that."

OOC: I'm assuming the same thing. I have no idea what we are expected to do. There's a map with lots of kruthik tunnels, there's initiative, it all suggests imminent battle. Maybe their' hiding underneath us, maybe there's a trigger. Up to the DM to make things move along at this point unless someone has a brilliant idea. Does one of you want to raid the alcoves for treasure in the meanwhile or go grab the things that are lying on the floor from that pouch?

Lan spends the time looking around very carefully at everything. the pyramid of skulls, the alcoves, the tunnels, the pillars, the floor, the ceiling, the walls, the rubble, and whatever else there is to see. He also listens very carefully, feels the air very carefully, smells very carefully, and generally notices all very carefully. Especially for signs of imminent danger or the tell-tale signs of weakened flooring where there might be kruthik holes or tunnels underneath. He also moves between Khav and Sentinel while looking around, before returning to his position.

1d20+4+1=16, 1d20+4+1=22, 1d20+4+1=25, 1d20+4+1=19 4 times perception roll

OOC: Third perception roll was a CRIT! Still don't know what we should do. Maybe we just leave and let the kruthiks kill that nasty beardless dwarf.

OOC: So, here's what's up, Josh. We players are metagaming a tad. We get a map and are told to roll initiative, and we assume there will be a battle. We choose a protective spot, and nothing happens. On the flip side, it's certainly plausible for our characters to come upon the site of a battle, and assume a possible attack.

Now, we also don't want to get mugged hard out in the open. I'm going to suggest that we move as a group and let Sentinel examine the book :) if Lan doesn't see anything.

Lan nods to Sentinel, catching his sentiments.

OOC: Sounds good, Nathan. After Josh posts what Lan sees with his perception crit, I'm okay with Nathan deciding where we move as a group, remaining vigilant.

Lan tell that the black arrows are goblin-made. Looking at the skull pile, he sees that there are gnomes, halflings, goblins, orcs, monsters, and foulspawn. Human and elf skulls are conspicuously absent. Also, the iron barrier holding the skull pile up looks like there are runes written on it, although from this distance, he cannot read them. As he scans the room, the glint of a key catches his eye near the torn bag. It looks like it fell out, along with everything else.

OOC: Ok, so, my purpose of this was to let you guys explore the room a bit while I finished grading my Final (just finished). I intended for there to be no immediate threat. I wanted you guys to roll initiative, because it is not something that is often convenient in PbP.

Lan points to where he sees the key by the torn bag and then points out the runes. As a group, the four of them head to the pile of skulls where the contents of the torn bag are and pick up all useful items (key, potion, etc), while Kurvilis and Sentinel examine the runes.

OOC: Yeah, well we missed the point. Rolling initiative kind of solidified our meta-gaming anticipation of an impending battle. Lan will pick up the items while the others examine things. I suppose the group will move to the four squares by the pile of contents from the bag.

The group moves closer to the skull pile. Lan picks up the bag, coins, key and bottle, while Sentinel picks up the book. Lan does not recognize where the gold coins were minted.

Kurvilis, meanwhile, looks more closely at the runes. He doesn't recognize anything magical about them or the skull pile, but the steel pole seems to have some arcane property. The gnome reads a few goblin words that say: "Ashurta, slayer of these weaklings, keeper of the Blade of the Ashen Crown. Even in death, he is stoic and strong. The might of Xoriat has not bested him, and Hell goes with him."

Kurvilis recognizes this as a claim that Ashurta killed all of those whose skulls lie in the pile. He also remembers the phrase "Hell goes with him" as a common goblin phrase, refering to influence over devils or other beings of a fiendish or fiery nature.

OOC: Are these locations ok?

OOC: Can I possibly get some background on manifest zones and Syrania, the Azure Sky? I'm guessing we can't get back to your defensive location in the corner before the combat ;)

Sentinel knows that Syrania is a huge metropolis and marketplace that those from all over the planes visit. In some ways, it looks like Sharn, except that it extends as far as the eyes can see and is entirely in the sky, a sky unmarred by clouds. Angels rule the plane and city and serve Onatar, Olladra, Kol Korran and good luck is often associated with the influence of the Azure Sky.

Sentinel also knows that Xoriat is the plane of Madness. Some have speculated that the Mourning may have been caused by Xoriat returning from its exile several thousand years ago.

Most of the time, the outer planes only influence Eberron as they get closer to the mortal realm, most of them on a rigid orbit that can take anywhere from 1 to hundreds of years, although two planes (Xoriat, and Dal Quor, the Region of Dreams) have not been coterminous in thousands of years.

Manifest zones exist as semi-permanent locations where a plane crosses into Eberron. Sometimes people can travel between planes in a single step. Other times, the properties of the other plane leaks into Eberron. The most famous example of this is the manifest zone of Syrania in Sharn. Sharn's wealthiest residents live in the uppermost towers of Sharn, called Skyway. These towers are actually floating in the sky, and many magical items that have to do with flight work much better in Sharn.

As the party starts investigating the bag and the skull pile, some kruthiks begin to emerge from the tunnels. A flying kruthik comes out of the tunnel to the east (M10), flying at Sentinel and trying to claw the warforged, but misses. Another flying kruthik comes from the tunnel in the northeast (K1), flying down past the skull pile, but not quite reaching anyone.

A young kruthik then emerges from the tunnel directly east and also attacks Sentinel, but can't come close to penetrating the swordmage's armor. Two more kruthiks, hatchlings both, attack Sentinel and Khav from the southern tunnel (E17). One misses Sentinel, badly, while the other just manages to rip a little through Khav's armor (4 damage).

OOC: Please go one at a time for now. Khav and Sentinel had the same initiative, though, so they can both go.

Features of the Room
Illumination: Dim light in the tunnel area; bright light in the chamber from white motes.
Ceiling: The initial passage has a ceiling that is 10 feet high. The chamber has a vaulted ceiling, 15 feet high near the walls, 20 feet high over the center of the room.
Alcoves: Each alcove is large enough for a Medium creature to occupy, but the bones make these squares difficult terrain. The alcove walls are blocking terrain.
Kruthik Tunnels: The kruthik tunnels are at D1, K1, M10, and E17. Medium creatures must squeeze to enter, while small creatures move at half speed. The circled tunnels (D1 and M10) indicate holes in the floor. A creature that enters one of these squares cannot move for the rest of its turn.
Pillars: Each circular pillar is 15 feet high, 4 feet wide and is cover terrain. They can be climbed with a DC 15 Athletics check.
Rubble Pile: The rubble pile is where the original entrance to the chamber stood. It is 5 feet high around the perimeter and 10 feet high in the two squares directly east of the old door (B8-9). Each rubble square is difficult terrain and requires a DC 10 Athletics or Acrobatics check to enter. A character who fails stops in the square he currently occupies.
Skull Pile: The skull pile slopes steeply to 10 feet high, and iron spikes hold the skulls in place. Anyone forced into or falling on the pile takes 1d6 damage. Entering a pile square requires a DC 7 Athletics check, and climbing to the top a DC 10 check; failure ends the creature's movement. A creature fighting from a pile square must succeed a DC 10 Athletics check each turn or fall and take damage. There is a tattered red standard that depicts a stylized black bird of prey in the center of the pile.
Stairs: The stairs are difficult terrain for those ascending them (at the bottom is a large iron door at O8-9).

"Oh, look, we're surrounded by kruthiks now. In the middle of this chamber, out in the open. Remind me not to listen to Sentinel anymore when he wants to go and examine something."

OOC: This is kind of what we were trying to avoid with all that positioning and now we're surrounded without much ability to maneuver. Lan's comments about Sentinel are just RPG fluff, since he can't get annoyed with the DM who doesn't actually exist in his reality. But if Josh ever becomes a PC in Eberron, Lan will swear his oath of enmity against him. ;)

Khav quickly cuts down the two hatchlings next to him and walks around a pillar to flank the Young Kruthik.

OOC: Please go one at a time for now.

As for the scenario, the encounter specifically states that no kruthiks attack until someone goes near the skull pile. And for what it is worth, you are in a good defensive position here. It may not be the greatest, but it is pretty good.

"Next time we can wait as long as you like, Lan. I'll do fine once the water runs out."

Holding his sword high, Sentinel calls upon his arcane might. The sword begins to faintly glow, then the light fades. A split second later, soundless thunder erupts throughout the room, causing Lan and Kurvilis to unconsciously clench their innards. Then, he quickly uses his powers to shield his friends from future attacks.
Actions:
Standard: Sword Burst upon green Sharn Kruthik and blue Young Kruthik.
Sword Burst upon green Sharn Kruthik (24HR) (cord explosion) and blue Young Kruthik (24Hr) (cord explosion) (CA). (1d20+5+1+1=18, 1d20+5+1+1+2=23, 1d6+3=8 )

After Khav finishes his move, the young kruthik next to him, bites the half-orc's ankle a little (2 damage to Khav). Sentinel's sword releases a burst of silent energy, hitting both kruthiks next to him (8 damage and WLR to Blue and Green). The swordmage places his arcane shield on the flying creature, hoping to protect his friends from their claws (AoS on Green). Both of the kruthiks quickly lash out with their mouths, trying to hit any flesh they can (4 damage to Sentinel).

More kruthiks emerge from the northern tunnels. First, a hatchling walks up to Kurvilis and is able to gash him with a claw (4 damage to Kurvilis, Fade Away), before the gnome turns invisible. Another young kruthik appears, this time from the northwestern tunnel (D1) and charges at Lan, missing. A fourth hatchling follows the third out of the northeastern tunnel and charges Sentinel, gashing him the same as the other did with his only friend (4 damage to Sentinel).

OOC: Please go one at a time for now.

Nathan, thanks for reminding me about the auras, I almost forgot.
